  • Patent number: 7502336
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are described for multi-carrier communication using adaptive tone-pruning. The method may include transmitting a data-bearing signal over a plurality of tones on a communication loop within a plurality of communication loops and calculating a minimum tone cost according to a tone cost algorithm. The tone cost algorithm defines a tone cost associated with a selected tone within the plurality of tones. The tone cost of the selected tone is based on a predefined loading frequency and a signal-to-noise ration (SNR) of the selected tone. The method also may include determining a bit loading pattern for the data-bearing signal according to the minimum tone cost. This determination may occur in response to a determination that a minimum allowable transmission power is greater than a minimum required transmission power for the data-bearing signal.

  • Patent number: 7499438
Abstract: Various methods and apparatus are described in for a wireless access point. The wireless access point allows access to a wireless LAN that has two or more service set identifiers (SSIDs). At least one of the SSIDs is associated with a public wireless LAN. The wireless access point implements a segmentation policy that 1) provides unimpeded access to a Wide Area network through the public wireless LAN based on a first type of application or a first type of device detected by the wireless access point and 2) restricts access to the Wide Area network through the public wireless LAN by requiring an authorization check to access the Wide Area network based on detecting a second type of application.

  • Publication number: 20070107019
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are described for a set top box. The set top box may include a satellite television reciever module, a broadband internet module, a digital video recorder, a storage medium, a first output port, and an integrated user interface. The satellite television receiver module receives satellite television broadcasts and converts the broadcast for display on a television. The broadband internet module converts content in a broadband signal for display on the television. The digital video recorder (DVR) allows a user to manipulate a digital stream of vidio programming from the satellite television broadcast. The integrated user interface displays on the television to allow a user to access an integrated content user experience by displaying icons that allow the user to select content from the satellite television broadcasts, the content in the broadband signal, and content from a first computer connected to the first network.

  • Patent number: 6839757
Abstract: A system and method for automatically discovering accessible services on a computer network and providing automatic access thereto. In particular, a gateway server is provided which periodically scans a building network for available network services and publishes links to the available network services over the Internet. Advantageously, a scanning engine of the gateway server periodically attempts to open a connection, or socket, with the port associated with each service to determine the availability of that service. The scanning engine initiates a second exchange with the port to validate the availability of the particular network service if the attempt to establish a connection with the port was successful. The scanning engine then creates a list of the identified accessible services. The list of accessible services may be configured as dynamic links on a gateway server web page to allow access to the identified network services from an outside network, via the dynamic links.

  • Patent number: 6661805
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for automatically configuring an Ethernet device as either an Ethernet end station or as an Ethernet hub to permit the Ethernet device to be coupled to another Ethernet device regardless of whether the Ethernet devices are Ethernet end stations or Ethernet hubs and regardless of whether a straight-through or crossover cable is used to interconnect the Ethernet devices. According to one embodiment, a control device is disposed between an Ethernet device physical layer and a connector for periodically reversing a transmit/receive configuration of the device until an Ethernet link is established. More particularly, a plurality of multiplexers are positioned in front of the Ethernet physical layer to switch between transmit and receive leads of the same polarity to selectively reverse the transmit/receive configuration of the associated Ethernet device. In operation, the transmit/receive configuration of and Ethernet device is positioned in a default, or initial, setting.

  • Patent number: 6081378
Abstract: A polarization converter polarizes an incident light beam having a first component with a first plane of polarization and a second component with a second plane of polarization orthogonal to the first plane. The polarization converter comprises a planar matrix for concentrating and collimating the incident light beam; a polarizer parallel to the planar matrix for refracting the first component and reflecting the second component; quarter-wave retarding means, parallel to the planar matrix and disposed between the planar matrix and the polarizer, for delaying the second component one-quarter wavelength relative to that of the first component; and reflection means, between the quarter-wave retarding means and the planar matrix, for reflecting the second component back through the quarter-wave retarder. The planar matrix may include on a top surface an array of first lenses and on a bottom surface an array of second lenses.

  • Patent number: 5757547
Abstract: A polarization converter for polarizing a light beam by converting all light waves to the same orientation comprises 1) a first beam dividing matrix of refractory material for dividing a single, large light beam into smaller sub-beam 2) a second beam focusing matrix for polarizing select portions of the sub-beams, and 3) a series of narrow and shallow polarizing cells. The second beam focusing matrix further comprises a plurality of concave lenses for redirecting each sub-beam and quarter wave retarders disposed in alignment with, and adjacent to, the reflective side of an equal plurality of mirror segments. The polarizing cells include either a first beamsplitter or a second beamsplitter, where the first beamsplitters and second beamsplitters are disposed in opposing diagonal fashion and in an alternating manner.

  • Patent number: 5719786
Abstract: A computer-based media data processor for controlling transmission of digitized media data in a packet switching network. When the processor receives a request from a network client node for presentation of specified media data stream presentation unit sequences the processor in response retrieves media data from a corresponding media access location, determines the media data type of each presentation unit in the retrieved media data, and designates each retrieved presentation unit to a specific media data presentation unit sequence based on the media data type determination for that presentation unit.
