Patent number: 9091623Abstract: A system for determining the characteristics of a volume of preferable small fungible products within an acceptable size range. The system differentiates among products even if in close contact to identify acceptable product. The system may store data for later review or for dispensing of product in real time. The system may include a scale to determine a sample's weight, a camera to image the sample, an imaging table to permit viewing of the sample, a processor to determine the number of products in the sample, and a processor to determine the density of desired product. The system may also determine product count-per-weight, product volume-per-weight, and/or product surface-area-per-weight. These determinations may be useful, including in determining product processing and packaging options.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2014Date of Patent: July 28, 2015Assignee: Satake USA, Inc.Inventors: William Keith Beaty, Patric Carey Pike, Calvin G. Gray

Patent number: 8682027Abstract: A system for determining the product density value of a zone of preferable small fungible products within an acceptable size range and potentially in an acceptable color range. The system differentiates among products even if in close contact to determine acceptable product. The system may store data for later review or for dispensing of product in real time. The system includes a scale to determine a sample's weight, a camera to image the sample, an imaging table to permit viewing of the sample, a processor to determine the number of products in the sample, and a processor to determine the density of desired product.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2012Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: Satake USA, Inc.Inventors: William Keith Beaty, Patric Carey Pike, Calvin G. Patent number: 8175327Abstract: A system for determining in near real-time the product density value of a zone of preferable small fungible products within an acceptable size range in a flow of products includes a sample input piping from a bin or piping of products, a sampling volume for fixing the size of a sample, a scale, a processor, an imaging table and an associated camera. The system may include a sample output pipe, and may include or be associated with a bagger/scale. Operation of these components provides for successively sampling of each zone in the bin to determine the quantity of acceptable product per unit weight and to control the flow of those products. The system therefore can compensate for variations among supplying entities where product supplies are subsequently piled atop one another. The system makes the density calculation available to the plant information system and an automated packaging system, which may be via a 16 bit scaled analoge or a serial interface, among other systems.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2010Date of Patent: May 8, 2012Assignee: Satake USA, Inc.Inventors: William Keith Beaty, Patric Carey Pike

Patent number: 7905357Abstract: A product flow control apparatus for use in sorting of products, and particularly relatively small products. The apparatus includes a reservoir of products to be sorted, a flow-rate control passage at which a flow restrictor limits the flow rate of products passing to a slide before imaging by a product viewer and sorting by ejector. A flow valve operates to provide products to a flow-rate control passage at a flow rate at which the product viewer and the ejector can operate.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2008Date of Patent: March 15, 2011Assignee: Satake USA, Inc.Inventors: Dale Adolph Svatek, Patric Carey Pike, Simon John Hills

Patent number: 7743927Abstract: An apparatus, and method of use, for reducing the operable width of the inclined slide of a gravity fed sorting machine includes an upper section for reducing the flow rate into the slide and for directing the reduced flow to the operable portion of the slide and a lower section for delimiting the operable portion of the slide. The upper section includes a body proximate the gravity fed sorting machine and which is connected to a product flow rate adjustment assembly and a partition so the product flow into the slide may be controlled and the flow of materials directed to the operable portion of the lower section, which includes a slide width control guide to limit the operable width of the inclined slide.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2008Date of Patent: June 29, 2010Assignee: Satake USA, Inc.Inventors: Dale Adolph Svatek, Patric Carey Pike
