    Abstract: An apparatus and process prevents and removes obstructions in the discharge opening of a metering slot of a coating apparatus, or fountain applicator, applying a coating medium onto a moving material web. The process repeatedly removes obstructions from the discharge opening of the metering slot, thereby preventing defects in the applied coating. The apparatus includes a scraper disposed and translatory movable within the discharge opening in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the material web.
