  • Patent number: 8614949
Abstract: Congestion control provides congestion control for one or more shared resources in a wireless communication network. In one exemplary embodiment, a congestion controller manages congestion of shared packet data channels by under-serving selected ones of the data connections sharing the packet data channel. Such selective under-serving may be effected by biasing scheduling of service on the packet data channel toward maximum throughput scheduling such that connections associated with poor radio conditions are naturally under-served. Further, the controller may manage congestion of other shared resources, such as shared transmit power resources, wherein congestion of the shared power resource is managed by under-allocating transmit power to selected ones of the connections. Congestion is sensed, for example, by monitoring transmit buffer occupancy levels, and/or reserve power levels.

  • Patent number: 8325654
Abstract: Managing radio resources and power for OFDMA uplinks is disclosed in which a threshold transmission rate for the reverse link is used by base stations to compare against the achievable reverse link transmission rate of a particular AT within the sector serviced by the base station. When the calculated rate is higher than the threshold rate, the base station allocates maximum power to the AT. Otherwise, when the calculated rate is lower than the threshold rate, zero power is allocated to the AT.

  • Patent number: 7944992
Abstract: In a multicarrier CDMA system, a data stream is divided into two or more substreams and each substream is assigned to a different carrier. An RLP context is created for each carrier and the substreams are transmitted within a corresponding RLP context over a designated carrier. If a carrier is lost or dropped, the corresponding RLP context can persist after loss of the carrier and retransmitted packets tunneled to a different carrier.

  • Patent number: 7839822
Abstract: Techniques are provided to assign radio resources with one of two or more types of assignments on a frame-by-frame basis. The first type of assignment uses subcarriers that are contiguous in both time and frequency, and the second type of assignment uses subcarriers that are disjoint and equally-spaced in frequency. The types of resource assignments can be multiplexed in a frame by dividing the frame into two zones, each zone of a different type. The demarcation between the first and second zones is implicitly indicated by the assignment messages for the mobile stations. Based on the loading conditions, the base station selects one of two demarcation strategies to use and communicates the selection implicitly by using one assignment message for a mobile station.

  • Patent number: 7835298
Abstract: A method and system of allocating a bandwidth and a power for a wireless user. The method includes for an allocated bandwidth determining a transmission power and adjusting the transmission power based on whether a bit rate and an error rate associated with the transmission power and the allocated bandwidth satisfy one or more predetermined criteria. The method further processing information associated with the adjusted transmission power and determining a power level indicator. Additionally, the method includes determining whether the power level indicator satisfies one or more predetermined third criteria. If the power level indicator is determined not to satisfy the one or more predetermined third criteria, the method includes adjusting the allocated bandwidth from the first bandwidth to a second bandwidth for the wireless user. Otherwise, the method includes keeping the allocated bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 7742455
Abstract: A scheduler at a base station may schedule packet data traffic based on a ranking metric that varies directly with the mobile station's scheduling downlink transmission rate and a delay factor indicative of the staleness of the corresponding queued data. The ranking metric may advantageously vary in a direct non-linear fashion with the delay factor to allow for delay sensitive data, such as VoIP data, to be scheduled with increased urgency when quality of service is about to be compromised. The scheduler may attempt to pack a multi-user downlink physical layer packet by selecting a tentative rate and determining if an aggregate amount of data in the packet may be increased by transmitting the packet at a lower rate. If so, additional queued data is added to the packet and the transmission rate for the packet is lowered. Such an approach allows for greater link efficiency to be achieved.

  • Patent number: 7706403
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rate control adjusts or otherwise requests adjustment of a communication link data rate based on transmit queuing delays. For example, a mobile station may monitor expected transmit queuing delays relative to one or more delay targets or other Quality-of-Service constraints, and request reverse link rate increases or decreases accordingly. Similarly, the mobile station may be configured periodically to request reverse link rate changes based on determining the rate needed to meet targeted queuing delays for one or more service instances being supported by the mobile station in each of a succession of ongoing rate control intervals. Requested rates may be defined data rates or may be virtual rates that can be achieved by using combinations of defined data rates. Queuing-based rate control also can be applied to the base station's forward link, and, more broadly, to essentially any rate controlled communication link.

  • Patent number: 7680125
Abstract: A method of scheduling wireless packet data traffic on a downlink packet data channel takes advantage of early decoding opportunities to decode the channel feedback reports before receipt of the mandated Lth repetition. The early-decoded channel feedback reports are promptly used in making scheduling decisions. Mobile stations are required to repeat transmissions of channel quality reports at least L times. The base station receives channel quality information report CFN from a first mobile station one or more times, but less than L times; and, prior to reception of the Lth repetition of CFN, successfully decodes CFN to form a first decoded report. Packet data transmissions on the downlink packet data traffic channel are scheduled based on CFN. A corresponding apparatus is also described.

  • Patent number: 7668134
Abstract: A base station in a wireless communication network multi-codes a shared packet data channel using a continually changing set of spreading codes, and dynamically updates the transmission frequency of messages identifying the spreading codes to be used for that multi-coding based on tracking the net gain in data throughput for the shared channel that is obtained by transmitting such messages. In a 1xEV-DV network context, for example, a Walsh code in the defined Walsh code space that is not contiguous with the Walsh codes currently allocated to multi-coding the 1xEV-DV Forward Packet Data Channel (F-PDCH) generally remains unavailable for such use until an updated Walsh Mask Broadcast (WMB) message is transmitted to the mobile stations being served on the F-PDCH. The base station thus is configured to determine the frequency at which to send such messages and thereby make the unavailable codes available for multi-coding use.
