    Abstract: Staple fibres of solvent-spun cellulose are made by a method in which:i) cellulose is dissolved in an amine oxide solvent to form a hot cellulose solution,ii) the hot cellulose solution is extruded through a die assembly to form a tow of continuous filaments,iii) the tow is passed through a water bath to leach out the amine oxide,iv) the tow is crimped by passing through a stuffer box in which it is compressed to apply crimp,v) dry steam being injected into the stuffer box during the crimping process, andvi) the crimped tow is passed to a cutter and cut to the desired fibre length. An apparatus is also provided in which the staple fibres can be made.

    Abstract: A jet assembly for spinning cellulose fibres from a solution of cellulose in an amine oxide solvent in which the jet assembly includes a generally top-hat shaped spinnerette having a series of downwardly directed holes through the base of the spinnerette and an outwardly directed flange around the periphery of the vertical walls of the spinnerette, the jet assembly including a heated housing engaging with the flange and being bolted to the flange, insulation being provided on the underside of the jet assembly over the outer periphery, the combination of heating and insulation regulating the temperature of the jet assembly for optimum spinning of an amine oxide cellulose solution.

    Abstract: A composite structure such as an aircraft brake disc has a matrix material reinforced by knitted panels of fabric arranged in a stack. The panels are knitted directly into the desired disc shape so that there is no fabric waste, by knitting a helix of fabric on a flat-bed weft knitting machine having a patterning mechanism which allows shaping and a presser foot or sinkers to hold the knitting down on the needles. The helix of fabric can be closed down to constitute the stack of disc panels directly or it can be separated into discrete disc panels by knitting in draw threads connecting successive windings of the helix. The disc panels may be knitted from oxidised acrylic yarn and then heated to carbonise the yarn. A stack of carbon fibre fabric panels may be embedded in a carbon matrix by carbon vapor deposition to form a brake disc.
