  • Publication number: 20080048553
Abstract: A light source, includes an LED emitter and a meniscus lens having a hollow cavity in which the LED emitter is disposed. The meniscus lens is in exemplary embodiments hyperhemispheric, and it produces a high quality optical image of the LED emitter. The cavity of the lens is filled with air, such as terrestrial atmosphere, inert gas, or vacuum.

  • Publication number: 20080051135
Abstract: A combination camera/projection system includes an image forming device, a light source, a projection lens, a detector array such as a CCD, and a beam splitter such as a polarizing beam splitter (PBS) disposed to direct light from the light source to the image forming device, and from the image forming device to the projection lens, and from the projection lens to the detector array.

  • Publication number: 20080037271
Abstract: A light source module is provided comprising an emitter having at least one light emitting surface and an at least partially hollow integrating optic mounted over the emitting surface; where the index of refraction within the hollowed area is less then the index of the subsequent medium along the optical path. The integrating optic has a proximal end facing the emitting surface and a distal end facing away from the emitting surface. The distal end of the integrating optic is flat and has a rectangular aspect ratio which can differ from the aspect ratio of the emitter. One or more optical films and/or an optical component such as a collection lens can be adhered to the distal end of the integrating optic.

  • Publication number: 20070279931
Abstract: A backlight is disclosed and includes a visible light transmissive body primarily propagating light by TIR with a light input surface and a light output surface and a light guide portion and a light input portion. The light guide portion has a light reflection surface and a light emission surface. The light input portion has opposing side surfaces that are not parallel. One of the opposing surfaces is co-planar with either the light emission surface or the light reflection surface. A light source is disposed adjacent to the light input surface. The light source emits light into the light input portion. A reflective layer is disposed adjacent to or on the opposing side surfaces.

  • Publication number: 20070152231
Abstract: An LED light source includes an LED emitter and an encapsulant that at least partially surrounds the emitter. The encapsulant includes an inner lens and an outer lens, the inner lens having a refractive index less than, and in some cases about 70 to 80% of, the refractive index of the outer lens. The inner lens and outer lens can contact each other along a curved surface, and in some cases the inner lens is substantially plano-convex and the outer lens is meniscus. The inner lens produces a first virtual image of the emitter and the outer lens produces a second virtual image, and the first virtual image is disposed between the emitter and the second virtual image. The LED light source is capable of providing uniform illumination in a compact space.

  • Publication number: 20070153397
Abstract: A projection system having a prescribed relationship between the condenser and the projection lens is disclosed, where an imager gate normally coinciding with a projection object plane is between and spaced away from a condenser back focal plane and a condenser image plane. The condenser images an extended source onto the condenser image plane. A pixilated panel or film defining a graphic image is located at the imager gate. The magnification of the condenser is chosen so the image of the source is essentially the same size as the pixilated panel. Positioning the imager gate away from the condenser image plane provides blurring of any brightness non-uniformities across the area of the source, providing a relatively uniform illumination pattern whose outer shape matches the shape of the imager gate.

  • Publication number: 20070153402
Abstract: A focusing unit includes a Fresnel lens combination, where the Fresnel lenses are oriented to reduce shadowing losses. Shadowing is a scattering of light from reflection at the facet walls that separate adjacent Fresnel zones on a given Fresnel lens. Two substantially adjacent Fresnel lenses make up the focusing unit, which can be used as a condenser that collects light from a source in a projection system. Both Fresnel lenses have non-faceted sides that face the light source. The first Fresnel lens collimates the light from the source. The second Fresnel lens receives the collimated beam, with a range of incident angles determined by the spatial extent of the source. Components such as reflective polarizers and anti-reflection coatings can be used between the Fresnel lenses and can be applied to the non-faceted side of the second Fresnel lens.
