Patent number: 6389541Abstract: Digital content such as text, video, and music are stored as part of a compressed and encrypted data file, or object, at a client computer, such as a personal home computer. The content is inaccessible to a user until a payment or use authorization occurs. Payment or use authorization occurs via a real-time, transparent authorization process whereby the user enters account or use data at the client computer, the account or use data is transmitted to a payment server computer, the account or use data is preprocessed at the payment server computer and if payment information is required and is present, the payment information is transmitted to a payment authorization center. The payment authorization center approves or rejects the payment transaction, and bills the corresponding account. The authorization center then transmits an authorization signal to the payment server computer indicating whether the transaction was approved and if not, which information was deficient.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1998Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: First Union National BankInventor: Patrick E. Patent number: 5137290Abstract: A blade alignment mechanism for an ice skate including a clamp for releasably securing the blade assembly to a skating boot in a trial position. The clamp includes a first member secured to the boot at a point remote from the screw apertures in the front or rear flanges, and a second member attached to the first member and disposed to contact one of the flanges to hold it in a trial position. The second member includes an enlarged adjustment opening that allows side-to-side and fore-and-aft adjustment of the second member with respect to the first member. The first and second members are locked into the selected trial position by tightening a threaded fastener that draws contacting serrated faces of the first and second members together. Thus, the blade assembly is releasably attached to the boot in a trial position for trial use by the skater.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1991Date of Patent: August 11, 1992Assignee: Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Patrick E. Patent number: 4808187Abstract: A means and method for tactile stimulus reception for use with a myoelectric prosthesis includes a pressure transducer positioned on the prosthesis. The pressure transducer senses the level of pressure experienced by the gripping portion of the prosthesis and converts the sensed pressure into a corresponding signal. A pressure stimulus member is positionable upon the user and creates a pressure stimulus proportionally corresponding to the sensed pressure of the pressure transducer by utilizing the signal from the pressure transducer. The pressure stimulus is tactile so that the user can be given direct tactile pressure stimulation corresponding directly with the pressure sensed by the pressure transducer.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1987Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Patrick E. Patterson, Judd A. Katz
