  • Patent number: 7616660
Abstract: A radio base station transmits periodic load indications based on the measured reverse link load to a plurality of mobile stations transmitting on a reverse link channel. If the measure reverse link load is within a first predetermined range, the radio base stations transmits a load indication instructing mobile stations transmitting on the reverse link to change their transmission rate probabilistically. If the reverse link load is within second predetermined range outside the first predetermined range, the radio base station transmits a load indication instructing mobile stations transmitting on the reverse link to change their transmission rate deterministically.

  • Publication number: 20090257392
Abstract: A system and method for packing two-dimensional data bursts in a downlink of a wireless communications system is provided. A method includes allocating resource units to users in the wireless communications system, and packing allocated resource units into rectangular bursts for transmission. • Patent number: 7599394
Abstract: A mobile station dynamically adjusts its data transmission rate based on periodic load indications from a base station. The mobile station calculates a load tracking value based on two or more periodic load indications, and then calculates a rate change probability as a function of the load tracking value. The mobile station selectively changes its transmission rate responsive to a current load indication based on the rate change probability.

  • Publication number: 20090245415
Abstract: A system and method for scheduling variable bit rate (VBR) streams in a wireless communications system is provided. A method for broadcasting data includes receiving a plurality of broadcast data streams, assigning the broadcast data streams into a plurality of frames, each frame including data from no more than one of the broadcast data streams, re-allocating the plurality of frames, and causing the frames to be broadcast wirelessly. The re-allocating is based on a queue length associated with each of the broadcast data streams and an arrival rate for data of each of the broadcast data streams.

  • Patent number: 7554954
Abstract: A method and apparatus enables a base station to control the reverse link data rates of the mobile stations. Such control may be used to improve reverse link throughput, and such improvements may be balanced against fairness of service interests. Broadly, a radio base station (RBS) makes per-mobile station rate control decisions in each rate control interval based on each mobile station's desired rate and past reverse link throughput. These values may be used to compute a priority value for each mobile station, which values are then used to prioritize the mobile stations in rank order. Rate control decisions are made for the mobile stations in rank order based on their desired rates and remaining reverse link capacity. In one embodiment, the mobile stations provide path loss information to the RBS, and it computes each mobile station's desired rate as the mobile's achievable rate assuming it transmitted at maximum power.

  • Patent number: 7519019
Abstract: A radio base station performs reverse link rate control in a wireless communication network by “stealing” bits on a forward common power control channel. The forward common power control channel is divided into a plurality of frames, with each frame including a plurality of power control groups and each power control group including a plurality of power control slots. The radio base station may dynamically select power control slots depending on user demand to be used for reverse link rate control.

  • Patent number: 7466669
Abstract: A base station (BS) is configured to support a plurality of mobile stations on the reverse link by selectively designating one or more of them as members in a rate-controlled set. Members follow the common rate control commands broadcast by the BS, while non-members do not. The non-members preferably fall back to a minimum data rate. Set members each provide feedback to the BS indicating whether the member is “mobile-limited” wherein it cannot increase its reverse link data rate even if commanded to do so by the BS, or whether the member is “command-limited” wherein the member could increase its data rate but is not permitted to do so by the BS. The BS dynamically adjusts membership in the set to maintain a balance between having too many mobile-limited or command-limited members, since either condition is inefficient. The BS also may adjust membership by attempting to equalize membership times in the set.

  • Publication number: 20080212527
Abstract: A method and system of allocating a bandwidth and a power for a wireless user. The method includes for an allocated bandwidth determining a transmission power and adjusting the transmission power based on whether a bit rate and an error rate associated with the transmission power and the allocated bandwidth satisfy one or more predetermined criteria. The method further processing information associated with the adjusted transmission power and determining a power level indicator. Additionally, the method includes determining whether the power level indicator satisfies one or more predetermined third criteria. If the power level indicator is determined not to satisfy the one or more predetermined third criteria, the method includes adjusting the allocated bandwidth from the first bandwidth to a second bandwidth for the wireless user. Otherwise, the method includes keeping the allocated bandwidth.

  • Publication number: 20080159215
Abstract: Managing radio resources and power for OFDMA uplinks is disclosed in which a threshold transmission rate for the reverse link is used by base stations to compare against the achievable reverse link transmission rate of a particular AT within the sector serviced by the base station. When the calculated rate is higher than the threshold rate, the base station allocates maximum power to the AT. Otherwise, when the calculated rate is lower than the threshold rate, zero power is allocated to the AT.

  • Publication number: 20070201398
Abstract: Techniques are provided to assign radio resources with one of two or more types of assignments on a frame-by-frame basis. The first type of assignment uses subcarriers that are contiguous in both time and frequency, and the second type of assignment uses subcarriers that are disjoint and equally-spaced in frequency. The types of resource assignments can be multiplexed in a frame by dividing the frame into two zones, each zone of a different type. The demarcation between the first and second zones is implicitly indicated by the assignment messages for the mobile stations. Based on the loading conditions, the base station selects one of two demarcation strategies to use and communicates the selection implicitly by using one assignment message for a mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20070086468
Abstract: A method of scheduling wireless packet data traffic on a downlink packet data channel takes advantage of early decoding opportunities to decode the channel feedback reports before receipt of the mandated Lth repetition. The early-decoded channel feedback reports are promptly used in making scheduling decisions. Mobile stations are required to repeat transmissions of channel quality reports at least L times. The base station receives channel quality information report CFN from a first mobile station one or more times, but less than L times; and, prior to reception of the Lth repetition of CFN, successfully decodes CFN to form a first decoded report. Packet data transmissions on the downlink packet data traffic channel are scheduled based on CFN. A corresponding apparatus is also described.

  • Publication number: 20070008934
Abstract: In a multicarrier CDMA system, a data stream is divided into two or more substreams and each substream is assigned to a different carrier. An RLP context is created for each carrier and the substreams are transmitted within a corresponding RLP context over a designated carrier. If a carrier is lost or dropped, the corresponding RLP context can persist after loss of the carrier and retransmitted packets tunneled to a different carrier.

  • Publication number: 20060245359
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for preventing excessive loading at a network node. The admitted load into the network node is monitored by a load detector. The load detector generates a load indication that is passed to a load controller. The load controller detects an overload condition based on the load indication and computes a message admission criteria for admitting new messages when an overload condition is detected. An admission controller throttles incoming message streams such that the ratio of admitted messages to offered messages satisfies the admission criteria provided by the load controller.
