  • Patent number: 7901753
Abstract: The present invention provides an artificial turf runway surface suitable for supporting take off, landing and taxiing of aircraft. The turf system cures many of problems and pitfalls associated with natural sand or grass systems, such as rutting, bare spots, erosion, unevenness, standing water as well as other problems associated with natural grass airstrips. The synthetic surface also removes nesting materials and food and thereby dissuades birds and other animals from landing and congregating thereon. The system includes a synthetic covering, such as an artificial turf covering, one or more sheeting or flow through membranes, a compacted rock base suitable for supporting the aircraft when landing, tacking off and taxiing.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 7806625
Abstract: An airport safety system includes an area of land wherein natural grass has been removed substantially from the grass and artificial turf having a plurality of synthetic fibers, the turf securely installed in the area without the use of a layer of infill dispersed between the fibers. The turf also is capable of absorpting fuel from a fuel spill at or near the area.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 12, 2007
Date of Patent: October 5, 2010
    Assignee: AvTurf, L.L.C.
Inventors: Patrick J. Carr, Dale L. Collett, William L. Schomburg
  • Publication number: 20100030709
Abstract: A method for marketing an artificial surface for application at an airport installed adjacent to a runway/taxiway includes: (i) causing advertising to be displayed on the artificial surface; (ii) obtaining revenue for causing the display of the advertising; and (iii) selling/installing the artificial surface at a discounted price in exchange for receiving at least a portion of the advertising revenue.

  • Patent number: 7198427
Abstract: A method for installing an aesthetically pleasing artificial turf that retards birds and other animals and a sub-surface that supports the weight of an aircraft, enhances water drainage and enables the accessibility of airport vehicles to all parts of a runway or taxiway is disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 18, 2003
Date of Patent: April 3, 2007
    Assignee: AvTurf L.L.C.
Inventors: Patrick J. Carr, Dale L. Collett, William L. Schomburg, Thomas M Sullivan
  • Patent number: 7175362
Abstract: Systems, methods and apparatuses for airport safety areas, runways and taxiways is provided. Various attachment systems for installing a synthetic covering are described. The use of artificial turf as well as various embodiments for a suitable synthetic matting for the installation are also described. Also, solar energy, heating and fire suppression systems are disclosed. A method of financing the turf system is also described using a synthetic covering with advertising.

  • Patent number: 6794007
Abstract: The airport marking system of the present invention includes a multi-pigmented artificial turf segment having a backing with base fibers and marking fibers, wherein the marking fibers are visually different than the base fibers. The different marking fibers are adaptable to define a plurality of different shapes and patterns. The different marking fibers of the turf of the present invention define: (i) one or more characters including numbers and letters; (ii) a character having a border around it; (iii) a plurality of parallel lines; (iv) a dashed line; (v) a plurality of parallel lines and a plurality of intersecting lines perpendicular to the parallel lines; (vi) a plurality of chevrons; (vii) a plurality of parallel lines disposed at an angle relative to a side of the area; (viii) a plurality of checkered four sided shapes; (ix) one or more arrows; and (x) an arrow adjacent to a character.
