    Abstract: The invention relates to a cell culture apparatus for cultivating cell spheroids, comprising at least one compartment having n compartment walls which define a compartment base area and a volume VK above the compartment base area and a multiplicity of microwells having p top edges and a volume VM, wherein the microwells are arranged in the compartment base area such that the compartment base area outside the microwells merely has inclined surfaces, the number of microwells is chosen such that the entire compartment base area is covered with microwells, all the microwells have the same volume VM and the microwells have the shape of a pyramid or a cone having a rounded tip for accommodation of cells and additionally rounded edges between the tip and the base of the pyramid or the cone.
