  • Patent number: 7736238
Abstract: A trunnion of a universal joint cross-shaped member supports a bearing cup, thrust washer, and needle bearing assembly. The thrust washer includes a first surface that faces the bearing cup and a second surface that faces an end face of the trunnion. A first lip extends outwardly from the first surface to contact the bearing cup and a second lip extends outwardly from the second surface to contact the needle bearing assembly. The first and second lips cooperate to hold the bearing cup and needle bearing assembly in a proper installation for final assembly to form a universal joint assembly.

  • Publication number: 20080096677
Abstract: A yoke assembly for a vehicle driveline includes a first component and a second component that are welded together. The first component comprises a yoke with an internal pilot surface. The second component comprises a tube or shaft having an external surface that abuts against the internal pilot surface. A single weld is then used to secure the yoke to the tube or shaft.

  • Patent number: 7361093
Abstract: A universal joint includes a seal assembly that is positioned between each trunnion and a corresponding cup. The seal assembly includes a resilient seal that engages an inner surface of the cup and an outer surface of the trunnion. A deflector provides a snap fit for attaching the cup to the trunnion. The deflector is formed form a rigid and deformable material that protects the resilient seal from contamination, in addition to retaining the cup to the trunnion.

  • Patent number: 5813916
Abstract: A universal joint bearing assembly incorporates a thrust washer molded from plastic. The plastic thrust washer eliminates the metal galling and metal debris that have been found in prior art universal joint bearings. A support notch is formed at radially outer surfaces to support an inner end of needle bearings. Resilient members bias the notch against the needle bearings such that the needle bearings are supported on the notch and against a seal at the outer end of the bearing cup. The resilient members are compressed when the universal joint is assembled such that the needle bearings operate properly. A central dome extension on the thrust washer insures that the thrust washer is not improperly mounted within the bearing cup. An outer face of the thrust washer is formed at an angle such that central portion extend further towards the trunnion than radially outer portions.

  • Patent number: 4605384
Abstract: A self-aligning tripod joint tulip cover for interconnecting an irregularly shaped non-circular tulip body and a shaft mounted spider assembly, as well as a closed tripod constant velocity joint incorporating the self-aligning tripod joint tulip cover, the tulip body, and the shaft mounted spider assembly. The self-aligning tripod joint tulip cover is provided with a first flange engageable with the outer surface of the irregularly shaped non-circular tulip body and a second flange engageable with a boot, the second flange being generally concentric with the first flange but having a substantially smaller maximum diameter. An inwardly oriented flange extends from the self-aligning tulip cover between the first and second flanges, the inwardly oriented flange being engageable with a flat front surface of the irregularly shaped non-circular tulip body to form a seal therebetween. The first flange is crimped for interconnection with the irregularly shaped non-circular tulip body.
