    Abstract: Indexing drives associated with a transmission each include a housing having a plurality of guideways, actuators slidably mounted in the guideways and a carrier with follower elements. The actuators include drive elements which can extend to the follower elements. The follower elements are movable across the drive elements and the drive elements are movable toward and away from the follower elements. The drive elements include convexities and the follower elements include concavities. The concavities are spaced from one another and the convexities are spaced from one another such that when one of the concavities is fully engaged with one of the convexities, two other of the concavities and two other of the convexities are sufficiently aligned to be partially engageable. The follower elements are severally arranged to provide cylindrical surfaces with concavities, circular surfaces with concavities and longitudinal surfaces with concavities.

    Abstract: A drive train for a four wheel drive vehicle including an engine and a clutch directing power through a high/low transmission to a six speed transmission located adjacent to and parallel with the engine in an expanded engine sump case. A constant velocity joint is driven from one end of the transmission output shaft for driving a rear differential associated with an independent rear suspension. From the other end of the transmission output shaft, a fluid coupling is employed to selectively engage a front differential. The front differential drives gear wheels to engage back to back constant velocity joints which are located lower than the differential rotational axis to advantage the suspension configuration.

    Abstract: A transmission having engagement mechanisms which employ an engagement inner having cam surfaces forming the race thereof, an engagement outer having a circular outer race and rollers therebetween. A cage mechanism angularly positions the rollers such that they may be wedged between the cam surfaces and the outer race so as to interlock the engagement inner and outer. Actuator mechanisms are employed which are axially movable to engage and angularly position the cages relative to the engagement inner for controlling the engagement mechanism. A plurality of control systems both electronic and mechanical control the operation of the engagement mechanism so as to require substantially synchronous movement between engaging elements. Alternately, nonsynchronous shifting may be accomplished under power for power or rapid shifting. Clutch inhibit may also be employed to prevent premature reengagement of the clutch before shift complete.
