  • Publication number: 20080115404
Abstract: A fishing fly for catching a fish, comprising a folded rubber string core, one or more materials surrounding the folded rubber string core form a pattern representative of food available to the fish, and an eye formed by a continuous section of the folded rubber string core extending from the one or more materials is provided. The one or more materials may include thread, feathers, or beads. The core may alternatively be metal, plastic, or unfolded rubber. A method of fishing using the fishing fly is also provided. The method includes attaching a fly to a line containing a hook at one end, the fly being attached at some distance from the hook, placing the hook end of the line into a body of water to be fished, and retrieving one or more fish caught on the hook.

  • Publication number: 20070175084
Abstract: A fly core and a method of making a fly are disclosed. The fly core includes a core, a line attachment structure and a line orientation structure. The line attachment structure and the line orientation structure are preferably located at opposite ends of the core. The core is preferably a single material with a Shore A Hardness less than 55 and is coated with a coating. The core can have ridges and can have an indent capable of holding a bead in place. The fly core does not include a hook.

  • Publication number: 20060230666
Abstract: Method and apparatus for long line fishing and for recreational bait fishing are disclosed. The method attaches bait to a line at a material distance from an attached and preferred circle hook. Separation of hook and bait on a line is sufficient to prevent the hook from entering a fish's mouth simultaneously with the bait. The method and apparatus are equally applicable to the branch line used in the commercial longline fishery and the line used in the recreational fishery. Line and bait attachment devices are described that allows a bait to slide on the fishing line, detach from the bait or be fixed thereon. A fish is hooked by striking bait affixed to the line at a distance from a hook. A fish's forward speed or an angler jerking the rod causes the line to be drawn through the fish's mouth and continues to pull the externally located hook until it engages with the outside of the jaw. The direction of hook-set is diametrically opposite traditional bait fishing methods.

  • Publication number: 20060225337
Abstract: A leader for use in fly fishing is disclosed. The leader is connected between a fly line and a tippet section. In one embodiment, the leader includes a first section of wire connected to the fly line and a second section of polymeric monofilament. The section of wire can be a shape memory alloy or a superelastic alloy. Nitinol is a preferred alloy for use in the wire section of the leader. The section of wire is attached to the second section of polymeric monofilament. One of more sections of wire can be used in the leader. Each of the sections of wire can be tapered. Additionally, one or more sections of polymeric monofilament can be used in the leader. In another embodiment of the present invention, a single section or multiple sections of wire, preferably shape memory alloy wire or superelastic alloy wire, can be used. The wire leader is able to store mechanical energy generated by the cast allowing the leader to function as intended with greater frequency.

  • Publication number: 20060218845
Abstract: A hook-less fly crafted on a core other than a hook is described for attachment to a line at a material distance from a distal circle hook. One or more fly(s) may be attached to a single line at a point above a single circle hook. The separation on the line of hook from fly requires only the fly to enter the fish's mouth. The hook, when a fish takes the fly, is externally located. Striking the rod in response to the fish taking the fly draws the line through the fish's mouth and engages the distally located circle hook into the outer jaw. Hook set offered by the method is diametrically opposed in direction compared to conventional fishing. The method prevents the hook from piercing internal organs and facilitates hook extraction. The method further overcomes the physical limitations imposed on circle hook use by conventional fishing methods. The method promotes the survival of fish following release. The design, construction and means of attachment for the hook-less fly is further described.
