  • Patent number: 4371842
Abstract: An automatic gain control circuit comprising a gain-controlled amplifier for receiving a variable amplitude, pulse-type input signal to produce a substantially constant amplitude, pulse-type output signal which is applied to a feedback circuit for comparison with a predetermined reference voltage to generate a control voltage to set the gain of the amplifier. A voltage limiter included in the feedback circuit clips the pulse peaks of the output signal whenever the peaks exceed a predetermined amplitude so that the gain of the amplifier is reduced in a prescribed manner to preclude output signal dropout. A peak detector and a filter included in the feedback circuit are capable of operating in fast and slow modes. When operating in the fast mode, the peak detector responds essentially to each pulse peak of the output signal and the filter has a wide bandwidth so that the automatic gain control circuit operates with a prescribed fast time response.

  • Patent number: 4329721
Abstract: A tachometer for generating a velocity signal in a data disc pack servo system comprising a sampling pulse generator for producing pulses that are spaced from one another by a constant amount representative of a distance increment of radial movement of a servo head in the system, a timer for measuring the time between the sampling pulses, the timer including a clock pulse source and a counter which is started by one sampling pulse and reset by the next succeeding sampling pulse so that the digital output thereof is proportional to time and a computer for computing average velocity by deriving the quotient of the distance increment divided by the time required for the servo head to traverse such distance increment.

  • Patent number: 4300080
Abstract: A power driver control circuit (38) provides control signals (44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54) for switching transistors in a power driver (56) for an electromagnetic actuator (11) of the type used for controlling a servo head (12) in a closed loop servo system. The control circuit includes variable time delay circuits (70, 71) connected to threshold detectors (74, 84) so that dead zones can be created when the servo error signal changes polarity thereby isolating the switches and preventing switch burn-out.

  • Patent number: 4288731
Abstract: In a disc pack data storage system that has a plurality of discs and a plurality of heads for coaction with the discs, a tachometer for producing a signal indicative of the radial speed of the heads with respect to the discs. At least one of the disc surfaces is a servo surface and at least one of the heads is a servo head so that in response to radial movement of the servo head a triangular position signal is produced. Sampling pulses indicative of specific radial positions of the head are derived from the position signal so that the time required for the head to move between two positions represented by adjacent sampling pulses is inversely proportional to radial head speed. Control and computing circuitry measures the time between adjacent pulses by providing a clock pulse source and counting the number of clock pulses that occur between adjacent sampling pulses.

  • Patent number: 4264935
Abstract: A tapped delay line (39) terminated with its characteristic impedance at both ends is connected to receive a differential input signal across ends (35, 37) of the delay line. Delay line taps 41, 43), as well as ends, are connected symmetrically to a pair of summing networks (71, 73) where voltage signal components having different delays from the input signal are linearly combined. The output waveforms from both summing networks are combined to provide a balanced differential signal that has been both amplitude equalized and differentiated from the input signal with variable amplitude for use in a signal detector (87, 89) that requires such a shaped signal waveform.
