  • Patent number: 9296258
Abstract: An axle shaft has radially outwardly extending drive fingers which drivingly engage drive slots in a wheel hub cover. The hub cover is rigidly secured to a wheel hub and maintains the axial position of the axle shaft. A shock absorber may be positioned between the drive fingers and the drive slots. The axle shaft may be formed from a hollow tube or a solid shaft by cutting an end portion of the shaft and deforming a cut section radially outwardly to form a drive finger.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 26, 2013
Date of Patent: March 29, 2016
    Assignee: Sypris Technologies, Inc.
Inventors: Stephen W. Straub, Patrick T. Maled
  • Patent number: 9266395
Abstract: An axle shaft has an inboard end portion with a spline for engagement with a differential assembly and an outboard end with a flange for mounting a wheel hub assembly. One or both of the end portions have cavities for weight reduction. The inboard end portion cavity extends underneath the spline. The outboard end portion cavity extends completely underneath the flange.

  • Publication number: 20150240880
Abstract: An axle assembly includes an axle in frictional driving engagement with a wheel hub. A torque limiting assembly limits the amount of torque that can be transmitted between the axle and hub. The torque limiting assembly includes an arm or rod, such as the shaft of a bolt, which biases the axle and hub together to provide a predetermined slipping torque. The rod or arm is housed in a clamp which extends axially over the outer peripheries of an axle flange and a hub flange.
