Patent number: 8289952Abstract: A voice-over-IP (VoIP) connection is established over a radio interface with a mobile radio station. A current radio condition for the VoIP connection is determined, and from that, a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for a portion of the VoIP connection. A VoIP voice encoding mode for a portion of the VoIP connection is selected based on the determined modulation coding scheme. VoIP voice is then encoded into a number of VoIP encoded frames using the selected VoIP voice encoding mode which has an associated bit rate. An optimal number of VoIP encoded frames is included in a VoIP packet for transport over the VoIP connection given the selected voice encoding mode and the selected MCS. Other adjustments may be made to ensure robustness of the VoIP connection and/or to maximize capacity.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2006Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Anders Larsson, Martin Lars Bäckström, David Bladsjö, Patrik Cerwall

Patent number: 7054635Abstract: A method and cellular communications network is provided that improves the speech quality near a border of a cell by dynamically changing the size of the cell. More specifically, the method includes the steps of selecting a cell from a plurality of cells, and receiving a plurality of mobile reports from a corresponding number of mobile terminals located in a portion (e.g., cell border area or a section of the cell border area) of the cell. In response to receiving the plurality of mobile reports, an average speech quality value is determined for the portion of the cell. The portion is decreased in size if a lower threshold exceeds the average speech quality value or the portion is increased in size if the average speech quality measure exceeds an upper threshold.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1998Date of Patent: May 30, 2006Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Benny Ritzén, Patrik Cerwall

Patent number: 6546255Abstract: The present invention relates to a method in a cellular mobile communication system for transmitting Pages, and such a system. The cells of the system are subdivided into two classes. To which class a cell is assigned is decided by its capacity to transmit Pages or by the amount of Page responses received within the cells. When paging a mobile station, the Page is first transmitted in the cells of the first class. If no response is received to that Page, the Page is transmitted also in the cells of the second class. An advantage is that there will be fewer Pages congested due to lack of capacity for transmission. Transmitted Pages in the cells of the second class are primarily transmitted to mobile stations that are really present within those cells. Thereby the probability increases that all mobile stations will be reached by Pages intended for them.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2000Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Carl Patrik Cerwall, Lars Erik Westerberg

Patent number: 6510321Abstract: A method and cellular communication network are provided that maintains a desired level of speech quality by controlling the admission of a new call within a serving cell of the network. More specifically, the method includes the step of establishing speech quality values for a serving cell and at least one of a plurality of surrounding cells being interfered with by the serving cell. The method then operates to determine whether or not to admit the new call to the serving cell by utilizing the speech quality measure of the serving cell and the speech quality measure of the at least one surrounding cell in a predetermined manner (e.g., cell level approach, sub-cell approach and combined approach) so as to maintain the desired level of speech quality within the serving cell and the at least one surrounding cell.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1998Date of Patent: January 21, 2003Assignee: Telefonaktiedolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Benny Ritzèn, Patrik Cerwall

Patent number: 6275701Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus in a mobile telecommunications system for the re-establishment of a speech connection, especially one that risks being interrupted prematurely. A parameter (Q) indicating the quality of the traffic channel (TCH) on which the speech connection is implemented, is compared to a predetermined value (Q1). If the parameter (Q) is lower than said value (Q1) the speech connection (340) is parked temporarily on a dedicated control channel (DCCH) of high quality. When a traffic channel (TCH) again becomes idle (360) the speech connection is handed over (370) to this channel, which may either be associated with the base station originally serving the speech connection or another base station in the mobile telecommunications system.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1998Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventor: Carl Patrik Cerwall

Patent number: 6272352Abstract: Methods of reconfiguring a cell regarding the number of signaling channels in relation to the number of traffic channels. Each signaling channel (SDCCH/8) contains a number of dedicated control channels (SDCCH), wherein a number of dedicated control channels are included in a basic configuration of control channels. If the channel utilization indicates that a basic configuration of control channels is congested for more than a certain percentage of time, a dedicated control channel is added to the basic configuration. If it is determined that the basic configuration, less one control channel, is congested less than a certain percentage of time then a control channel is removed from the basic configuration.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1998Date of Patent: August 7, 2001Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Carl Patrik Cerwall, Anna Helleberg

Patent number: 6157839Abstract: This invention relates to methods of initiating a reconfiguration of a cell regarding the number of signalling channels in relation to the number of traffic channels. Each signalling channel (SDCCH/8) contains a number of dedicated control channels (SDCCH). The invention can be divided into two parts, an increase condition in which a traffic channel (TCH) is converted to a signalling channel (SDCCH/8) and a decrease condition in which a signalling channel is reconverted to a traffic channel. These two conditions can be performed independently of each other. In the increase condition, the conversion to a signalling channel is done based on three conditions (1,2,3; FIG. 3) depending on the number of idle dedicated channels (SDCCH) and the number of traffic channels (TCH). In the decrease condition, the conversion (FIG. 4; FIG. 5) is based on the number of signalling channels (SDCCH/8) and the dedicated control channels (SDCCH) in the cell.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1998Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM EricssonInventors: Carl Patrik Cerwall, Anna Helleberg

Patent number: 6032047Abstract: A method for establishing a new broadcast control channel carrier frequency within a cell without disturbing ongoing call traffic is disclosed. A cell having a base station transmitting broadcast control channel data over an existing BCCH carrier frequency establishes a second BCCH carrier frequency within the cell. During a first time period BCCH data is transmitted on the existing first BCCH carrier frequency. During a second time period, both the existing and new BCCH carrier frequencies carry BCCH data to enable surrounding mobile stations to detect and recognize both carriers. The transmission of the old BCCH carrier frequency is then discontinued during a third time period, such that the broadcast control channel data is only transmitted on the new BCCH carrier frequency.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1997Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L/M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Carl Patrik Cerwall, Stig Roland Bodin
