  • Patent number: 7277173
Abstract: An optical package includes one or more MEMS mirrors to provide alignment between internal optical components and the signal port(s) on the package (where one or more ports may include optical fiber attachments). Once the components are placed in the package, an electrical signal is used to adjust the deflection profile of the appropriately positioned MEMS mirror(s) until maximum coupling between the internal components and the fibers/ports is obtained. Advantageously, if later signal degradation occurs due to, for example, subsequent physical misalignment of the internal components, corrective electrical signal can be sent to the MEMS mirror(s) to provide correction and re-alignment without having to open the package and physically move the components.

  • Patent number: 5394837
Abstract: A furnace comprising a lower radiant section and an upper convection section, the lower section having associated fuel burners; generally vertically extending first tubular structure suspended in the first section; second tubular structure extending generally horizontally relative to the first section and suspending the first tubular structure; and grid structure extending generally horizontally and supporting the second tubular structure; whereby hot combustion gases produced by the burners flow upwardly in the first section and past the first and second tubular structure and the grid structure to the upper convection section; and the second tubular structures and/or the grid structure are cooled by circulation of fluids therein.

  • Patent number: 4393816
Abstract: A thermodynamic method is described and claimed for improving the quality of wet steam produced by conventional and once through type boilers. Moisture entrained with such steam is first separated in a steam-water separation vessel. The separated moisture is thereafter vaporized by pressure reduction and flashed to form lower pressure steam and condensate containing dissolved solids. The condensate is utilized to preheat fresh boiler feedwater. The lower pressure steam is condensed and supplements the boiler feedwater to form a hotter combined net feedwater stream containing reduced quantities of dissolved solids. Practice of the method, in association with commercially available boilers producing saturated to moderately superheated steam at temperatures of up to about 970.degree. F. and steam pressures of up to about 2,900 psig, has resulted in increases in the quality of the steam produced from about 70% to about 99% (substantially dry steam).
