  • Publication number: 20140264168
Abstract: The invention generally relates to optically variable devices, methods of preparation and applications or uses therefor. In particular, the invention includes trigger molecules employed as a dopant for a liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal material contains helical elements having a natural twist. The dopant is effective to change the natural twist of the helical elements when the dopant is addressed with incident light. Suitable dopants are selected from binaphthalene and derivatives thereof.

  • Publication number: 20140268327
Abstract: An optically variable device includes a substrate and a plurality of optical elements formed in or on the substrate and being structured to provide a three-dimensional optical effect for a viewer when light is incident on the optical elements. The plurality of optical elements are arranged as a plurality of stereo pairs structured to reflect or refract light to corresponding focal points in three-dimensional space apart from the optically variable device to form the three-dimensional optical effect. The optical elements include one or more optical elements that are curved structures having a curvature that is either less than or greater than a semi-circle.

  • Publication number: 20130266722
Abstract: A security device includes an optically variable device (OVD) having diffraction-based micro-optics including at least one moiré magnified visual representation of a micro-object. A diffractive structure provides micro-objects with unique optical effects when the OVD is viewed through the micro-object structure from a predetermined relative observation point. In addition to magnifying the micro-objects, the diffractive structure can impart optical effects such as change in observed color, enhanced contrast, animation of the observed visual representation, and change in size or shape of the observed visual representation. The micro-objects and the diffractive structure can be disposed on the same or different portions of a substrate. A method of making OVDs, and an article employing such OVDs are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8370122
Abstract: A method and apparatus for segmenting geobodies extracted from three-dimensional geophysical survey data volumes. In one embodiment, the invention involves (a) obtaining a plurality of data elements, respectively corresponding to three-dimensional locations in a subsurface region, and generating a data volume consisting of discrete cells from the plurality of data elements (1); (b) identifying an initial geobody corresponding to a potential hydrocarbon reservoir within the data volume by grouping cells in the data volume according to a selected connectivity criterion (2); (c) selecting a rule (3) that characterizes stratigraphically reasonable geobodies (e.g. they cannot vertically overlap); and (d) in response to a determination that the initial geobody does not conform to the rule, segmenting the initial geobody into a plurality of fundamental geobodies via processing the data elements with an automated segmentation routine, wherein the fundamental geobodies each conform to the rule (4).

  • Patent number: 7369980
Abstract: The present invention is a method for constructing a geologic model of a subsurface reservoir which is a composite sedimentary body (30) composed of many smaller fundamental sedimentary bodies (32). In one embodiment, the fundamental sedimentary bodies (32) within the composite body (30) are specified by the properties of the flow which built them, including the flow properties that existed at the local inlet (36) of each fundamental body (32). The statistical distribution of these local inlet properties is characterized throughout the composite sedimentary body (30) using either outline forms of some of the fundamental sedimentary bodies (32) or a well penetration which samples the composite sedimentary body (30).

  • Patent number: 7277842
Abstract: A helical scan drum design for use in non-tracking tape devices which assures 70% coverage of a track to be read by overscanning with at least two read heads at approximate 1X speed. The present invention further provides a simulation method for evaluating potential drum designs for such overscan applications. The preferred drum design uses pairs of read heads having identical azimuth angles and positioned on the rotating drum such that in combination they overlap the scan of a track by 130% the track width. These dimensions assure at least 70% coverage of each track by at least one of the pair of heads at up to 1X speed while assuring no overlap with another recorded track recorded along an identical azimuth angle. The simulation method allows for evaluation of potential drum designs by accepting parameters describing the intended drum application and then simulating track read operations over a plurality of simulated tracks to determine the efficacy of the design over a range of tape speeds and gap widths.
