  • Patent number: 6774999
Abstract: An apparatus (100) for measuring toner concentration in a developer contained in a developer housing (10) includes a developer sample container (102) that receives a portion of developer extracted from the developer housing (10). A spectrophotometer (112) measures spectrophotometric data for the portion of the developer in the developer sample container (102). A processor (116) estimates the toner concentration based on the measured spectrophotometric data and a pre-determined relationship (118) between the spectrophotometric data and the toner concentration. A method (200) for estimating the toner concentration in a developer comprising a toner and a carrier includes measuring (220) a color characteristic of the developer, comparing (222) the measured color characteristic with a pre-determined relationship between the color characteristic and the toner concentration, and estimating (226) the toner concentration based on the comparing.

  • Patent number: 6173133
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to an imaging system, and more specifically, a method and apparatus for accurately predicting toner usage and hence toner dispensing requirements in an imaging system. More particularly, the present invention relates to a toner concentration control system for maintaining toner concentration in a developer structure, which is connected to a dispenser containing toner. The toner concentration control system comprises: a sensor, reading the toner concentration; means for determining a toner age correction of toner concentration read by the sensor based on toner age of the toner in the developer structure; means for adjusting a toner concentration target based on the correction; and means for generating a feedback dispense command based on the adjusted toner concentration target to dispense toner into the developer structure to maintain the toner concentration in the developer structure.

  • Patent number: 5337133
Abstract: A system to extend fuser roll life in which image data is varied in its placement on the photoreceptive member and correspondingly, the image receiving substrate position is varied so as to maintain proper location of the image data on the substrate while varying the transverse position of the substrate transverse to the paper path direction. This position varying may take place sheet to sheet or in a job by job arrangement on a printing machine. This varying of lateral position of the sheet causes the high pressure, excessive wear area on the fuser roll to be distributed over a wider area on the roll and not concentrated at a single point at each edge of the sheet. This leads to longer fuser roll life and additionally provides the added benefit of preventing an oil buildup which degrades copies when larger legal size sheets are utilized and/or also preventing associated jams due to the oil buildup at the sheet edge.

  • Patent number: 5208636
Abstract: A printing machine in which two electrostatic latent images are recorded on a photoconductive member. One of the latent images is a charged area latent image with the other image being a discharged area latent image. A magnetic developer unit develops the charged area latent image with black toner particles. A non-magnetic developer unit develops the discharged area latent image with toner particles of a color other than black. The toner particles from both latent images are transferred substantially simultaneously to a sheet and fused thereto forming a color high lighted document.

  • Patent number: 4615613
Abstract: Cleaning apparatus for removing residual toner particles from a charge retentive surface. The apparatus utilizes a cleaning brush to which an electrical bias is applied in order to enhance the toner removal. The brush has different biases applied thereto in accordance with the area of the charge retentive surface being cleaned. Thus, when toner is being removed from the document area of the charge retentive surface, one bias level is applied and when the interdocument area is being cleaned a different bias is applied thereby increasing the cleaning latitude.

  • Patent number: 4533236
Abstract: Magnetic brush cleaner for removing residual charged particles such as toner from a charge-retentive surface such as a photoreceptor. The brush cleaner has a bias voltage applied thereto for establishing an electrostatic field for aiding in toner removal. A control is provided for varying the bias voltage applied to the brush cleaner in accordance with variations in photoreceptor potential to thereby maintain the cleaning potential (i.e. the difference between the applied bias voltage and the photoreceptor potential) invariant.
