Patent number: 5970662Abstract: A system for subdividing a building space into work areas includes interconnectable partition panels, each having an internal frame with a plurality of horizontal frame members located at predetermined heights. The horizontal frame members each have at least one horizontal row of slots, and at least one of the horizontal frame members is located slightly above an optimal worksurface height for supporting an interactively used datum shelf. Furniture components are attachable to the horizontal frame members at selected horizontal positions, including the datum shelf, an undershelf storage unit, and an upper storage unit. A mobile furniture unit is provided having a worksurface located at an optimal worksurface height, the worksurface having a cantilevered edge section that can be extended partially under the datum shelf at a selected optimal depth for coordinated and efficient use of the datum shelf concurrent with using the worksurface.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1998Date of Patent: October 26, 1999Assignee: Steelcase Development Inc.Inventors: Sean M. Corcorran, Charles Anthony Seiber, Robert P. Arko, Frank Friedman, Leon D. Segal, Jonathan J. King, Karl J. Mead, Paul B. Siebert

Patent number: 5765932Abstract: A utility grommet adapted to be mounted in an opening defined by a worksurface of an article of furniture includes a grommet body configured to be supported in an opening on a worksurface of an article of furniture, and first and second spaced apart supports connected to the grommet body for supporting a utility attachment. The utility grommet has the advantage that it can be used either to pass a power cable or communications cable through the worksurface to an amenity supported on the worksurface, or alternatively the grommet can act as a support for any of a variety of different utility attachments.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1996Date of Patent: June 16, 1998Assignee: Steelcase Inc.Inventors: Chris L. Domina, Paul B. Siebert, Eric E. Pante

Patent number: 5687513Abstract: A dynamic workspace module is provided for open plan spaces, and the like, and includes a compact footprint, comprising a freestanding framework supporting a three-sided partition to form an interior workspace and a portal opening for user ingress and egress. A door partition shaped to selectively close the portal opening is movably mounted on the framework. The door partition preferably has an arcuate plan shape, and is positioned adjacent one side of the portal opening, such that shifting the door partition from the fully open position to the fully closed position both increases the amount of the interior space in the workspace module, and alters the plan shape thereof for improved freedom of user movement, while alleviating any sense of user claustrophobia.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1995Date of Patent: November 18, 1997Assignee: Steelcase Inc.Inventors: Mark A. Baloga, Paul B. Siebert, Marvin LaLone, David J. Luzenske, Brian B. Chambers, Michael E. Tingley, Gregg R. Draudt, Steven W. Eriksson

Patent number: 5619824Abstract: A heat releasable bracket, for supporting a ceiling panel under normal conditions, and for releasing the ceiling panel when exposed to elevated temperatures caused by a nearby fire or the like, includes a first bracket part which includes a mounting portion for securing the first bracket portion to a support structure such as a beam, column, wall, etc.; a second bracket part which is adapted to be secured to the first bracket part and provide a support for the ceiling panel; and a heat releasable link which normally joins the first and second bracket parts together, but which releases the second bracket part from the first bracket part when exposed to elevated temperatures, which in turn allows the ceiling panel to drop away from the position at which it is normally supported. The heat releasable bracket can form part of an effective and relatively inexpensive ceiling panel support system comprised of at least one heat releasable bracket and at least one other bracket which is not heat releasable.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1995Date of Patent: April 15, 1997Assignee: Steelcase, Inc.Inventors: Scott H.
