  • Patent number: 6117594
Abstract: A lead acid cell including a positive plate or grid has been discovered involving Pb/Ca/Sn/Ag alloy. An interaction between tin and silver which leads to optimum tin and silver levels which are substantially different than those indicated in the prior art. The described optimum tin and silver levels results in a positive alloy with superior mechanical properties and improved corrosion resistance which leads to superior battery life in present day SLI applications. In a preferred manner, the alloy includes lead, tin in the range of about 0.8% to about 1.17%, and silver in the range of grater than 0 to about 0.015%, the percentages being based upon the total weight of the lead-based alloy.

  • Patent number: 5637420
Abstract: A self-latching handle for storage batteries includes a cam mechanism formed integrally with the ends of the battery handle, the cam mechanism cooperating with the battery housing as the battery handle is rotated downwardly from a vertical attachment position to a horizontal storage position to lift the ends of the battery handle to move pivot post portions of the battery handle into pivot apertures formed in the cover of the battery housing and to lock the battery handle to the battery housing while permitting the battery handle to be pivoted between the horizontal storage position and a vertical use position without becoming detached from the battery housing.

  • Patent number: 5225292
Abstract: A battery system is disclosed which includes folded grids of expanded metal inserted through non-conductive substrates and pasted with electrochemically active materials. In the most preferred embodiment, a frame is provided with a plastic insert, and slots are provided in the latter to receive the expanded metal grid. After suitable coinage of the grid and insertion through the plastic film, the grid is sealed and pasted on opposite sides with positive and negative active material. A battery is assembled using one or a plurality of the resulting electrode elements, with separators, to produce a high-power, lead-acid battery. The folded grid provides many of the design benefits of standard bipolar construction.
