Patent number: 7849870Abstract: A pressure control valve having a common plenum formed by two flow control valves that each utilize electrically controlled piezoelectric actuators to generate a number of possible operating states and thus control an output pressure from the common plenum formed by the two flow control valves. The flow control valves each have at least one pressure fitting and nozzle, and a nozzle orifice sealing mechanism coupled to the piezoelectric actuator. The piezoelectric actuator may be a piezo-ceramic actuator fixed along one side to a chamber of the flow control valve and having a free side opposite the fixed side. Upon receiving a voltage of a desired magnitude and polarity, the free side of the piezo-ceramic actuator and the nozzle orifice sealing mechanism moves to control a fluid flow into the common plenum. By controllably dithering the piezoelectric actuators, the output pressure from the common plenum may be accurately regulated.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2008Date of Patent: December 14, 2010Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Paul DuPuis, Lee Vetsch

Patent number: 7841579Abstract: A gimballed valve for a flow control valve operates as a sealing member for an adjustable nozzle and is coupled to a piezoelectric actuator having stacked piezoelectric members that are toroidally shaped. The gimballed valve includes at least two support rings and a center closure member. In one embodiment only an outermost support is in contact with at least one member of the piezoelectric actuator. The support rings may be concentrically arranged and coupled together with flexure members. The center closure member operates to seal against an orifice in the adjustable nozzle and may deflect upon contact with the adjustable nozzle to account for misalignment issues that may arise during machining and/or assembly of the flow control valve.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2008Date of Patent: November 30, 2010Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Paul DuPuis, Lee Vetsch

Patent number: 6848367Abstract: The present invention relates to priming device for the explosive charge of a sub-munition scattered by a carrier, of the type incorporating a firing pin onto which a deployable drag ribbon has been attached, a primer able to be driven by a motor organ and a detonating primer to ignite the explosive charge. This device also comprises self-destruction means for the sub-munition operating after a predetermined delay, such means being activated by the extraction of a self-destruction lock. It is characterized in that the self-destruction lock is integral with the drag ribbon and is therefore extracted by the ribbon during its deployment.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2001Date of Patent: February 1, 2005Assignee: Giat IndustriesInventors: Philip Fouqueau, Jean-Paul Dupuy

Patent number: 5670736Abstract: A priming system for the explosive charge of a sub-munition carried on board a carrier comprises a main firing pin, a primer tube operative to move from a safety position to an armed position, at least two devices to lock the primer tube in the safety position before the sub-munition is ejected, and a self-destruct mechanism operative to destroy the sub-munition after a predetermined delay. A first one of the locking devices is formed of a cam operative to move from a cam safety position, in which it forms a limit stop preventing the primer tube from passing freely into an armed position, to a retracted position in which it allows free passage of the primer tube. The cam carries an auxiliary firing pin to ignite a delay cord of the self-destruct mechanism. A second one of the locking devices engage the primer tube by the percussion tip of the firing pin to hold the primer tube in a safety position.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1996Date of Patent: September 23, 1997Assignee: Giat IndustriesInventors: Patrice Chemiere, Jean-Paul Dupuy

Patent number: 5445077Abstract: An initiation device includes a primer-container system placed inside a casing box able to move from a safety position to an armed position through the action of a motor. The system is immobilized in its security position by at least one lock that is released by a shape memory actuator when the surrounding temperature rises above a given value.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1994Date of Patent: August 29, 1995Assignee: Giat IndustriesInventors: Jean-Paul Dupuy, Gilles Halin, Laurent Chauveau, Alain Bonnet

Patent number: 5440992Abstract: A priming and self-destruct system for a munition having its own rotational movement about a longitudinal axis includes a trigger mounted to pivot about an axis parallel to the rotational axis of the munition under the effect of centrifugal force and against the action of a return spring. The self-destruct system also has a retention device for a secondary firing pin having its own spring in the armed position that is controlled by the trigger when the system is rotating about the axis of the munition. In the event of a malfunction, the secondary firing pin is released by the trigger when the rotation ceases, i.e., when the munition comes to rest on the ground. At that point and without delay, the secondary firing pin pierces the priming system and initiates the munition.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1994Date of Patent: August 15, 1995Assignee: Giat IndustriesInventors: Patrice Chemiere, Jean-Paul Dupuy
