  • Patent number: 6728068
Abstract: A flexible circuit for use in a head gimbal assembly having low stiffness and high robustness. The flexible interconnect circuit has interconnecting leads which connect the flexible interconnect circuit to a transduction head. To ensure the transducing head is able to follow the surface of the disc and properly read from and write to the disc, the interconnect leads are constructed with a varying width. The leads are widened at the points where breakage usually occurs and are narrowed at a middle portion to ensure the leads maintain the desired flexibility.

  • Patent number: 6728082
Abstract: A magnetoresistive transducer includes a substrate and a magnetoresistive assembly. At least one bleed resistor couples the magnetoresistive assembly to the substrate. The bleed resistor has a relative large electrical resistance and provides a discharge path for accumulated charge. The arrangement effectively prevents electrostatic discharge damage to the sensor.

  • Patent number: 6650505
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for providing improved roll static angle adjustment for head gimbal assemblies (HGA's) used in disc drives. In the method, proximal and distal clamping members are attached to a load beam of the HGA and are separated by a distance of 4-30% of the length of the load beam. One of the distal and proximal clamping members is rotated about a longitudinal axis of the load beam such that the relative angular position of the distal and proximal clamping members reaches an adjust angle. Also disclosed is a rigid beam section of an HGA that includes apertures which are positioned along maximum stress contours where early plastic deformation of the rigid beam section is desired during adjustment of the roll static angle.

  • Publication number: 20020154454
Abstract: A head gimbal assembly that includes a bleed resistor applied over a specified area of the reader, writer and ground leads in order to protect from ESD damage is disclosed. The present invention address the need for an ESD protection system that includes a consistent and secure connection with leads, that does not contaminate the drive environment and applies a consistent resistivity to both the reader and writer element by providing a head gimbal assembly with strategically placed bleed resistors that will protect the read element from transient charge produced any time during the fabrication, assembly, testing and shipment of the disc drive.

  • Patent number: 5991113
Abstract: A device for reading and recording magnetic data includes an aerodynamically supported slider with an air bearing surface, and a transducer mounted to the slider for movement toward and away from the air bearing surface responsive to changes in the slider operating temperature. In one embodiment, the transducer movement is primarily due to a difference in thermal expansion coefficients between a transducing region of the slider incorporating the transducer, and the remainder of the slider body. In another embodiment, a strip of thermally expansive material is incorporated into the slider near the transducer to contribute to the displacement by its own expansion. A temperature control circuit, coupled to the strip of thermally expansive material or to a resistance heating element on the slider, employs a variable current source to control the slider temperature and transducer displacement.
