  • Patent number: 8061736
Abstract: Binders and binder spines are disclosed that provide for easy insertion of labels into binder slots and also easy removal and replacement of labels in the binder slots. One printed material binder according to the present invention comprises a hardcover binder having front and back binder panels that are joined at a binder spine. The spine has a transparent cover and the spine comprises a spine support that is longitudinally foldable to open a space between binder spine and transparent cover. This open space allows for insertion of labels between the binder spine and transparent cover. When the spine support is returned flat, the label is held between the binder spine and transparent cover.

  • Publication number: 20080226385
Abstract: A printed material binder, comprising a hardcover binder having front and back binder panels that are joined at a spine having and inside and outside surfaces. A binder mechanism is removably mounted to said spine inside surface by a mounting mechanism providing at least one removable connection point between said binding mechanism and said spine. Many different mounting mechanisms can be used including, but not limited to, socket and stud fasteners, string/strap and hole arrangements, clip-in and shank fasteners, and ball and socket fasteners.

  • Patent number: 6695518
Abstract: An improved system for labeling the spine of a binder is disclosed. The system includes an improved flexible label leader to load labels into a binder slot. The leader includes a first end portion having an adhesive section for adhering a binder label thereto. It also includes a second end portion for pulling the label adhered to the first end portion into a binder slot and a middle portion between the first and second end portions that resides in said binder slot. The adhesive section of the first end portion in detachable from the remainder of the leader.

  • Patent number: 5330279
Abstract: A loose-leaf binder (40) or other bound work has a slot (44) defined between the outer surface of a cover or spine (48) thereof, and a transparent overlay (46) attached over the spine (48) into which a label (54) can be inserted. The overlay (46) is sealed to the spine (48) along its longitudinal edges. An elongated, flexible label leader (42) extends through the slot (44) and protrudes therefrom at its opposite ends. An adhesive portion (52) is formed on a surface (42e) of an end portion (42b) of the leader (42). The label (54) may be inserted into the slot (44) by releasably adhering an end of the label (54) to the adhesive portion (52) of the leader (42), and pulling on an opposite end portion (42c) of the leader (42), thereby pulling the attached label (54) into the slot (44). A loop portion (42f) extends from the end portion (42b) of the leader (42), and is folded back and adhered to an opposite surface (42d) of the end portion (42b).

  • Patent number: 4998840
Abstract: A loose-leaf binder (10) or other bound volume has a slot (24) defined between the outer surface of a spine (12) thereof, and a transparent overlay (22) attached over the spine (12), into which a label (30) can be inserted. The cover (22) is sealed to the spine (12) along its longitudinal edges (46). An elongated, flexible label leader (26) is designed to extend through the slot (24) and protrude therefrom at its opposite ends. An adhesive portion (28) is formed at one end of the leader (26). The label (30) may be inserted into the slot (24) by releasably adhering one end of the label (30) to the adhesive portion (28) of the leader (26), and pulling on the other end of the leader (26), thereby pulling the attached label (30) into the slot (24).

  • Patent number: 4681472
Abstract: A system is disclosed for locating a label on the spine of a bound work. An elongate leader extends through a slot formed when an overlay cover is placed on and sealed to the spine of the bound work, and out each end of the slot. The leader includes an adhesive portion in the vicinity of one end onto which a label can be affixed. The leader is pulled longitudinally through the slot, causing the label to enter the slot through one transverse edge. Pressure is then applied to the label via the overlay cover, and the force on the leader is continued until the leader separates from the label, leaving the label at a desired position along the spine of the bound work. The label can be removed from the spine in a similar fashion by sliding the adhesive portion of the leader through one transverse edge of the slot until it adheres to the label. The leader and label are then withdrawn from the slot.
