A query for available software for installation on the mobile electronic device receiving is received from the computing device, the query directed to a proxy server rather than a public server enabled as a gateway for software downloads. A list of the available software is generated. The list is modified to produce a modified list of approved software. The modified list is transmitted to the computing device such that the approved software can be selected for installation on the mobile electronic device.

The computing device is enabled for communication with the mobile electronic device via a local connection, and further enabled for communication with at least one server storing software bundle data, via a communication network. Device configuration data is received, at the computing device, from the mobile electronic device via the local connection. At least a portion of the device configuration data is transmitted from the computing device to the at least one server. At least a portion is compared to the software bundle data to identify software modules for updating the software bundle. A first subset of the software modules to be added to the software bundle and a second subset of the software modules to be removed from the software bundle are determined.

Abstract: Backing up and/or restoring a software application so as to facilitate compatibility checking with a target device prior to application restore is disclosed. At a computer, one or more application modules collectively comprising the software application may be uploaded from a source device. The existence, at the source device, of metadata describing, for each of the application modules: a compatibility of the application module with at least one target device model; and a compatibility of the application module with at least one API version of the target device operating system, may be determined. Depending upon the outcome of the determining, either the metadata is uploaded from the source device or metadata is generated based on an ascertained API version of an operating system and model of the source device. The metadata may then be associated with the uploaded application modules.
