  • Patent number: 5213114
Abstract: A drape for eye examination and surgery is provided for covering the anterior and interior surfaces of the eyelids. The drape includes a retainer, which in its preferred form is generally annular in shape. The retainer is insertable beneath the upper and lower eyelids and fits generally within the upper and lower palpebral sulci. A sheet of thin membrane material is attached to the retainer and extends peripherally outwardly from the retainer. When the retainer is in place on the eye, the sheet of membrane material covers the anterior and interior surfaces of the eyelids and simultaneously folds back the eyelashes. In the preferred embodiment of the drape the annular retainer is adjustable in size. Alternative shapes for the sheet of membrane material are disclosed. A method is also provided for installing and using the drape to cover the anterior and interior surfaces of the eyelids.

  • Patent number: 4870964
Abstract: Method and apparatus providing to a medical practitioner visual feedback of information revelant to a surgical or therapeutic procedure are described. Vacuum and pressure conditions are sensed by a "T" section tap onto the aspiration and irrigation lines of conventional equipment. Ultrasonic power level also is sensed, by electronic means responsive to conventional emulsification equipment. The signals produced thereby are processed to produce an image the reflection of which off the patient's cornea is visible to the surgeon and interpretable by the surgeon as indicative of the conditions. Processing and imaging means convert the analog signals to a digital code used to modulate the various elements of a circularly arrayed, plural element light source. The processing and imaging electronics are contained within a light array housing connected at the end of a freestanding, flexible, gooseneck lamp fixture.

  • Patent number: 4634423
Abstract: An ophthalmological instrument for facilitating controlled insertion of an intraocular lens having resilient, open-loops into the posterior chamber of an eye includes a holder dimensioned for being held by a surgeon from which extends a loop-receiving member configured for receiving and deforming a first one of the loops from its normally nonstressed arcuate shape into a substantially straight and stressed condition. A displacement device associated with the loop-receiving member is selectively operable by the surgeon for displacing the first loop away from the loop-receiving member so that the stored energy in the loop imparts rotation to the lens as it is inserted into the posterior chamber of the eye.

  • Patent number: 4379626
Abstract: A facility for conducting ophthalmological examinations or tests on a plurality of patients, includes, in a preferred embodiment, a first examining station defined by a room having an opening provided in one wall thereof used in conjunction with a second examining station defined by a room also provided with an opening in one wall thereof opposed laterally to the first examining station. A display device, such as a screen is disposed inside the second examining station for displaying test indicia to be visually perceived by a first patient situated in the first examining station. Test indicia are projected onto the screen by means of an acuity projector disposed in the first examining station. Additionally, the facility may further include a second display screen disposed inside the first examining station for displaying test indicia to be visually perceived by a second patient situated in the second examining station.

  • Patent number: 4378108
Abstract: An auxiliary table for use with an operating table to support a surgeon's hands during, for example, eye surgery includes a support table having a substantially planar upper surface for supporting the surgeon's hands. A mount detachably connected to the operating table holds the support table and enables the support table to be selectively oriented from a preoperative position remote from a patient's head to an operative position overlying the patient's head. Additionally, the mount includes a base and a pivot with the pivot interconnecting the base to the operating table for permitting the base to be angularly displaced, along with the support table, from the preoperative position to the operative position.

  • Patent number: 4214585
Abstract: An intraocular lens for surgical implantation in the eye includes a lens body, posterior loops extending from the lens body for orienting the lens body in the eye's anterior chamber and a novel clip joined to the lens body. The clip extends into an iridectomy provided in the iris, when the lens body is implanted, in a nonstressed condition to thereby attach the iris to the lens body, flexing of the clip being required prior to its being extended into the iris. A surgical tool having an elongated means with a longitudinal bore therethrough slideably receives the clip in a flexed stressed condition while simultaneously holding the lens body for implantation and positioning within the anterior chamber. After proper positioning, the tool is removed and the stressed clip will spring back through the iridectomy to its nonstressed condition for attaching the lens to the iris.

  • Patent number: 4190050
Abstract: A trephine instrument for use in surgical removal of a cornea includes a cylindrical blade mounted on an elongate handle. The blade is power-driven and an actuating element is operable for selectively extending and retracting the blade. In a second embodiment, an ultrasonic source powers the blade. Further, the blade is detachably connected to the handle so that it may serve as a storage container for a cornea. In both embodiments, the handle includes offset portions so that a surgeon may grip the instrument with both hands and position the blade adjacent an eye.

  • Patent number: 4169664
Abstract: An apparatus for use in determining the peripheral vision extent of a patient's eye includes a contact lens type construction detachably fitted to the eye having multiple optical fibers each extending to an illuminating source. Upon illumination of a selected fiber, light is directed into the eye and the patient's response noted. The fibers are distributed so as to extend radially outwardly on the lens and thus a patient's responses provide a so-called "map" of peripheral vision extent.
