  • Patent number: 4712752
Abstract: An air dam (102) is positioned between an opening (101) existing between the wing rear spar cavity (34) and a flap track fairing (18c) that depends downwardly from wing (10) to block the flow of air between the fairing and the rear spar cavity, thereby also reducing the drag on the wing.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 19, 1985
Date of Patent: December 15, 1987
    Assignee: The Boeing Company

  • Patent number: 4618109
Abstract: A first air dam (60) is disposed chordwise within the rear spar cavity (34) of an airplane wing (10) to block the spanwise flow of air therethrough, thereby reducing the volume of air entering the spar cavity (34) through openings located in higher pressure regions of the wing and exiting through openings located at the lower pressure regions of the wing. The reduction of air flowing into and out of the rear spar cavity (34) results in a decrease in the loss of momentum in the local airflow, thereby achieving a corresponding decrease of the drag on wing (10). A second air dam (102) is positioned between the opening (101) existing between the wing rear spar cavity (34) and a flap track fairing (18c) that depends downwardly from wing (10) to block the flow of air between the fairing and the rear spar cavity, thereby also reducing the drag on the wing.
