Patent number: 6027450Abstract: A method and system for recanalizing a totally or near totally occluded body lumen such as an artery which has an elongated catheter shaft with means such as a cutting or ablating element at the distal end of the shaft to remove occluding material and with ultrasonic imaging means preferably located on the shaft proximal to the cutting or ablating element to allow the operator to maintain the radial position of the distal end of the catheter shaft within the body lumen so that no contact is made between the cutting or ablating means and the wall defining the body lumen. The imaging system preferably includes one or more ultrasonic transducers which emit ultrasound in a direction having a substantial radial component, or a substantial axial component or both.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1994Date of Patent: February 22, 2000Assignee: Devices for Vascular InterventionInventors: Peter S. Patent number: 5451207Abstract: Catheter-based coronary surgery is performed in a system which includes a combination of bypass of the heart, perfusion of the heart and the use of a therapeutic catheter to loosen plaque deposited in a coronary artery. Bypass is done with a bypass circuit circulating blood from the right atrium through an extracorporeal bypass unit and back through a femoral artery. Perfusion is done by passing a perfusate into the heart for retrograde flow, then drawing the perfusate out of the heart through a catheter which also serves as a guide for the therapeutic catheter. The open distal end of the guide is placed sufficiently close to the functional element at the end of the therapeutic catheter that plaque which has been loosened by the action of the therapeutic catheter is carried into the guide along with the perfusate, and hence out of the patient's body.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1994Date of Patent: September 19, 1995Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventor: Paul G. Patent number: 5311871Abstract: A needle and syringe assembly including a transducer for directing ultrasonic waves through the needle and receiving reflected ultrasonic waves through the needle as the needle is inserted into tissue. The ultrasonic transducer has a surface area which substantially equals the surface area of the plunger head within the syringe body to permit the delivery of more power and thereby increase the depth of penetration of the transmitted and reflected waves. A lens may be associated with the transducer for focusing ultrasonic waves from the transducer through the needle. Further, the transducer may include a plurality of sections or portions in a planar arrangement to permit either continuous wave or pulsed wave transmission and reception of the ultrasonic energy passing through the needle.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1993Date of Patent: May 17, 1994Inventor: Paul G.
