  • Publication number: 20210323103
Abstract: A method includes removing a section of electrical insulation proximate an end of a tubing-encased conductor (TEC) to form an end of electrical insulation that is axially recessed relative to the end of the TEC. The method includes welding an end member to an outer surface of the outer tube at a weld joint that is axially between the end of the TEC and the end of the electrical insulation to protect the electrical insulation from heating damage from welding. The method includes replacing the section of electrical insulation proximate the end of the TEC by inserting a spacer into the end of the TEC between the outer tube and the electrical conductor after welding the end member to the outer surface of the TEC. • Publication number: 20210131269
Abstract: This disclosure presents an apparatus to improve the position sensing of a moving mechanism, such as a fluid valve located within a borehole. The apparatus can utilize a light beam or an optical fiber to measure changes in the position sensor. The smaller and lighter apparatus can improve the accuracy of the sensing mechanism. In addition, three systems are presented. The first system utilizes a vibration sensor, such as a MEMS, and an accelerometer to calculate changes in the mechanism position of the moving mechanism. The second system utilizes a radiation source and detector combination, along with a moving radiation shield to provide more accurate position sensing than conventional techniques. In addition, a lens-based system is presented, that when combined with a radiation source, can calculate position information by detecting the diffusion or dispersal of the radiation against a radiation detector.

  • Publication number: 20210069999
Abstract: Transparent, electrically conductive vanadium oxide-based perovskite films and methods of making the vanadium oxide-based perovskite films are provided. Transparent conducting vanadate perovskites are made by forming a layer of amorphous vanadate perovskite precursor around a plurality of nanoscale, crystalline, perovskite oxide seeds and heating the layer of amorphous vanadate perovskite precursor at a temperature that favors lateral vanadate perovskite crystal growth from the perovskite oxide seeds over homogeneous crystal nucleation within the layer of amorphous vanadate perovskite precursor material. The crystallization processes can form the desired vanadate perovskite phase directly or via a transformation in a controlled gas environment from an initial crystallized vanadate perovskite phase that has a higher oxidation state.

  • Publication number: 20210032960
Abstract: A system is provided for providing power and/or communication to/from a downhole device by inductively coupling a coupling conductor within a receiver to a core conductor of a tubing encased conductor (TEC). The receiver has an elongated housing arranged physically proximate or touching an outer surface of the TEC. A coupling conductor is disposed within the housing, extends substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the housing, and further extends longitudinally and in close proximity to a core conductor housed within the TEC when the housing is arranged physically proximate or touching the outer surface of the TEC. This exposes the coupling conductor to a magnetic field formed externally to the TEC to excite a current in the coupling conductor. In one or more embodiments, the receiver further includes a coupling to electrically couple the downhole device to the coupling conductor and deliver the current to the downhole device.

  • Publication number: 20210025074
Abstract: A method for crystallizing an amorphous multicomponent ionic compound comprises applying an external stimulus to a layer of an amorphous multicomponent ionic compound, the layer in contact with an amorphous surface of a deposition substrate at a first interface and optionally, the layer in contact with a crystalline surface at a second interface, wherein the external stimulus induces an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transformation, thereby crystallizing the layer to provide a crystalline multicomponent ionic compound, wherein the external stimulus and the crystallization are carried out at a temperature below the melting temperature of the amorphous multicomponent ionic compound. If the layer is in contact with the crystalline surface at the second interface, the temperature is further selected to achieve crystallization from the crystalline surface via solid phase epitaxial (SPE) growth without nucleation.

  • Patent number: 10823869
Abstract: A casing has a plurality of joints of pipe joined by a plurality of casing collars, and an outer surface. A high-frequency alternating current (AC) source electrically is coupled to the casing. A coating of insulating material covers the entire outer surface of the casing. The coating has an opening that exposes a casing portion. The casing and the coating of insulating material define a capacitive electrode having an impedance Zf with a magnitude |Zf| at the frequency of operation f of the high-frequency AC source. Zf is low enough to allow current from the high-frequency AC source to be injected from the casing through the coating of insulating material into a surrounding formation. The casing portion has a resistance R to direct current (DC) with a magnitude that is very large compared to |Zf|.
