  • Patent number: 5670879
Abstract: A nondestructive inspection device and a method of monitoring a defective condition in a rotating member of a combustion turbine engine using a nondestructive inspection device is presented. The nondestructive inspection device includes a sensor for monitoring the rotating member and a holder assembly for positioning the sensor near the rotating member without disassembling the combustion turbine engine. The holder assembly is capable of interchangeably positioning either an ultrasound transducer or an eddy current sensor. Signals indicative of the monitored condition are recorded and compared to a signal representation generated from a reference standard having a known defect so that a defective condition can be ascertained. The location of a defective condition is ascertained by using a magnetic belt having a plurality of magnets wrapped around the rotating member and an additional sensor to detect the magnets as they rotate.

  • Patent number: 5442285
Abstract: The present invention provides an eddy current sensing device capable of in-situ operation within a high temperature and high vibration environment of a combustion turbine engine. The eddy current sensing device is preferably utilized in an eddy current sensing system for monitoring crack formation and displacement of rotating members of the combustion turbine engine. The method according to the present invention provides inducing eddy currents in the rotating member, detecting the eddy currents, providing a signal indicative of the detected eddy currents, filtering the signal based on the condition to be monitored and evaluating the filtered signal to determine whether the condition, such as the formation of a crack in the surface of the rotating member exists, and if so, determining whether the condition is critical or routine.

  • Patent number: 5161291
Abstract: Adjustable machining apparatus for machining a cylindrical workpiece, such as an electrical generator rotor or stator. The apparatus includes a spindle for holding a cutting tool, which spindle in turn is engaged by a motor for rotating the spindle and cutting tool. Attached to the spindle is a swivel for pivoting the spindle about a pivot point laying on a first axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. A first translation mechanism is attached to the swivel for moving the swivel along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. A second translation mechanism is connected to the first translation mechanism for moving the first translation mechanism along a third axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. A third translation mechanism is connected to the second translation mechanism for moving the second translation mechanism along a fourth axis paralle to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5105658
Abstract: An inspection system inspects the interior of the stator of an electric generator for the existence of several problems. The inspection apparatus is mounted on a carriage that travels along the slots defined by the stator. An indexer is mounted to the rotor of the generator and can travel around the circumference of the rotor to deliver the carriage to the desired slot. An indexer plate is mounted to the indexer and can be registered with the desired slot to insure that the carriage can enter the slot from the indexer.
