Abstract: A method of forming a disposable suction swab from an elongated stem having an enlarged, resilient tip at one end. The stem is installed in a longitudinal central channel in the tip, and the assembly is then compressed between a pair of displaceable clamp plates, the plates having drill apertures in registration with one another and with the tip being in alignment with the apertures. A hole is then bored through the compressed tip and stem by drilling through the apertures in the clamp plates. The plates are released to eject the formed swab.

Abstract: A secure container system comprising a first container with a second container mounted thereon, the container having adjacent sides that are complementary to one another. The first container includes a pair of spaced channels and the second channel includes opposite flanges which engage the channels for mounting the second container on the first. The first container has a door which, when closed, includes an extended portion comprising a stop for selectively preventing lateral movement of the second container relative to the first. When the door is opened, the second container may be laterally removed from its mounting on the first container.

Abstract: An anti-resheathing device for preventing a needle sheath from re-engaging the hub of a needle after the sheath has been disengaged from the hub when the needle hub has been inserted in a needle retention socket. The sheath has a pre-determined exterior dimension in that portion of the sheath adjacent the needle retention socket. A wall extends outwardly from the socket toward the sheath, and has an interior dimension less than the exterior dimension of the sheath and is constructed of a displaceable material having a memory such that the wall is displaced to accommodate the sheath when the hub is inserted within the socket. When the sheath is then removed from the hub, the wall returns to a substantially undisplaced orientation and, due to the exterior dimension of the wall, prevents the sheath from being re-engaged on the hub.

Abstract: A urine collector of the type having a flexible collection bag and an adhesively-faced attachment member joined to the bag and which is adapted for attachment to the uro-genital area of an infant or small child. The attachment member is fabricated from a flexible, preformed material such as a foamed plastic and has a barrier formed therein having a raised, curved bulge which is shaped to span the perineum of an infant. A rear recess is formed in the attachment member behind the bulge in order to aid application of the collector to an infant. A removable carrier is secured to the adhesive face of the attachment member to protect the adhesive coating and retain the shape of the attachment member. The carrier is removed before use of the urine collector.

Abstract: A disposal container particularly adapted for hospital use and comprising a hollow container body having a slot at the top to permit access to the interior of the container body and having a barrier disposed adjacent the slot for restricting access to the interior of the container body. The barrier comprises a first cowl extending over the slot and a complementary second cowl extending beneath the slot, and a raised shelf at one side of the slot opposite the location of the first cowl. A pivotal closure is provided for sealing of the container when filled.

The first portion is composed of a hollow, outer enclosure adapted for wall-mounting and including an elongated slot inlet at the top with a barrier adjacent the slot for restricting access to the interior of the enclosure. The enclosure also includes a hinged access door for permitting insertion of the second portion of the invention, an inner container, therewithin. The inner container includes an inlet formed in registration with the slot when installed within the enclosure. The inner container includes a pivotal closure which may be locked in place when full in order to prevent access to the contents of the container.

Abstract: A system and method for collecting, transporting and grinding tissue specimens and the like which includes a long hollow container into which the sample of tissue is placed. A pestle or grinder of a shape to conform to the interior of the container is placed into the container in order to grind the sample. Attached to this grinder is a flexible protective sheath which envelops the grinder and container combination during grinding and thereby prevents contamination of the specimen or the surrounding atmosphere.

Abstract: A closure for permanently closing a syringe collection and disposal container provides additional protection against injury or accidental contamination from used needles which have been collected and are awaiting disposal. A wheel-shaped cover is used to open and close an access opening in the top of the container. After the container is full, the wheel is rotated to a closed and locked position. The closure comprises a boss formed on the inboard side of the wheel which drops into an aperture formed in the container in the closed and locked position, thereby restraining further movement of the wheel and preventing the container from being reopened.

Abstract: A needle and syringe destructor is disclosed having particular suitability for the destruction of hypodermic syringe needles, of the single-use variety, immediately after use. The needle, and a portion of the syringe barrel, may be simultaneously severed in a single motion by means of the operator actuating a lever arm means. The lever arm means is linked to a pair of guillotine shears effectuating severance with increased mechanical advantage to the operator. Severed portions drop to a storage chamber. Remaining syringe barrel portions may then be discarded into the storage chamber through a movable closure lid providing separate access to the storage chamber. The severed needle and syringe are destroyed to prevent re-use and accidental injury to medical personnel.

Abstract: A syringe needle removal and disposal device is disclosed and comprises cap means and a container. The cap means includes means for disengaging needles affixed to syringes and disposing used needles into the storage container. The cap means also includes movable closure means for controlling access to the storage container. The device is portable and ensures safe disposal of used needles for hypodermic syringe needles of the one ended variety, and blood sampling needles for both the one-ended and double-ended types.
