Patent number: 7619867Abstract: Disclosed is an enhanced conformal coating, a process for making the same, and several computer related applications. A commercially available conformal coating is combined with a commercially available blowing agent (sometimes called a “foaming agent”) to create an enhanced conformal coating. The formulation of the enhanced coating is such that it will emit a particular gas when heated to a particular temperature. The enhanced coating is then applied to an object to which pre-damage heat detection is desired. A sensor, located proximate to the object, is then used to detect the emitted gas. Once the gas is detected, actions can be taken to reduce the heat in a manner appropriate for the particular object. Application of the enhanced coating within the computer industry can involve its use with a particular electrical component or a group of electrical components (e.g., a circuit board). For example, the enhanced coating can be applied to one or more circuit boards.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2002Date of Patent: November 17, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Dale Larry Christensen, Joseph Paul Kuczynski, Nicholas Alexander Poleschuk, Jr.

Publication number: 20030223131Abstract: An optical subassembly for an optoelectronic module includes a multifunctional acrylate resin adhesive to adhere a lens and/or an optoelectronic device, e.g., having a laser or a photoelectric receiver chip. An adhesive composition including a multifunctional acrylate resin cures to form an adhesive having a tightly cross-linked network of low CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion). The adhesive's low CTE can improve (as compared to conventional, optically clear adhesives) the vertical offset, for example, of the lens relative to the optoelectronic device at the operating temperature of the subassembly. For example, an adhesive composition including a multifunctional acrylate resin (e.g., a di-, tri-, tetra-, pentafunctional acrylate resin, or a mixture thereof) may be applied to a ball lens and/or a recess of a silicon optical bench, which are then joined and the adhesive composition cured. The adhesive composition may be cured by exposure to UV radiation and/or heat, for example.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2002Publication date: December 4, 2003Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventor: Joseph Paul Kuczynski

Publication number: 20030020998Abstract: An optical subassembly for an optoelectronic module includes an adhesive interface between a lens and an optoelectronic device, e.g., having a laser or a photoelectric receiver chip. In addition to eliminating moisture condensation, the adhesive interface can eliminate damage to a structural adhesive that may occur when air of a conventional interface expands as the structural adhesive is cured. The adhesive interface has optical transmittance at the optoelectronic device's operating wavelength, e.g., 850 nm. The lens surface shape is selected based on the adhesive interface's refractive index. An adhesive is applied both to the lens and to the optoelectronic device, which are then joined and the adhesive cured to form the adhesive interface. The adhesive is cured by exposure to UV radiation and/or heat, for example.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2001Publication date: January 30, 2003Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventor: Joseph Paul Kuczynski

Publication number: 20020144771Abstract: A photocurable adhesive composition is disclosed which includes a photocurable adhesive and an effective amount of a ceramic-containing modifier which does not substantially reduce a photocure rate of the photocurable adhesive. The modifier alters the flow properties of the composition to facilitate controlled dispensing of the uncured adhesive composition. The modifier alters the thermal expansion properties of the cured composition to reduce bondline stress. The preferred modifier includes inert, alkali alumino-silicate microspheres. A method of adhesive bonding is also disclosed in which an adherend is adhered to a substrate using a photocurable adhesive composition containing a photocurable adhesive and microspheres.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2002Publication date: October 10, 2002Inventor: Joseph Paul Kuczynski

Patent number: 6356686Abstract: An optically clear encapsulant for optoelectronic packages exhibits a suitably high viscosity both to replace a silicon nitride passivation layer required on a VCSEL die and to fill a gap between the die and an optical coupler, preventing light signal degradation. The encapsulant exhibits optical transparency to light having a wavelength of about 850 nanometers (nm) with substantially no Mie scattering since particulate fillers are not required to modulate viscosity in the encapsulant. Also, the encapsulant further seals wire bonds between the die and a cable header to prevent abrasive wear. The gap-filling encapsulant is particularly suitable for use with vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) technology. The encapsulant includes prior to curing, a difunctional acrylate epoxy resin exhibiting pseudoplastic flow and a viscosity of greater than about 0.7×106 centipoise.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1999Date of Patent: March 12, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Joseph Paul Kuczynski

Patent number: 6280797Abstract: A material and a method for forming a tamper-indicating identification coating are provided. The components of the coating are selected such that the coating exhibits a characteristic absorption spectrum with distinct features in individual regions during Fourier-transform infa-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. The coating components are selected to provide a distinct spectrum while, at the same time, providing a sufficiently complex spectrum such that the coating is difficult to duplicate. Also, a blowing agent in the coating decomposes to change the FTIR spectrum due to the heat associated with resoldering of an out-of-warranty electronic part marked with the identification coating to an in-warranty circuit card. In addition, the coating may contain a fluorophore to reveal the presence of a tamper-indicating identification coating, allowing a manufacturer to check the card by exposure with ultra-violet (UV) light. Further, the coating composition may be changed periodically and tracked to provide a date marker.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2000Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Joseph Paul Kuczynski, David Otto Lewis
