A water-based waterproofing composition may include a clay (e.g. a ball clay). A method of preparing a waterproofing composition may include mixing a coal tar, an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, and ground roofing shingles to form a mixture; and heating the mixture to a temperature of at least about 160° C. to form a waterproofing composition.
