    Abstract: An engraver having an engraving signal generating system for engraving a workpiece. The engraver includes a setup circuit enabling direct dimensional control of the cavities engraved by the engraver. Controls are provided for setting at least one of a plurality of parameters, such as a black cell width. These parameters are fed to the setup circuit which translates them into multiplication factors for an AC signal and a videosignal. The multiplied signals are combined with an offset signal to produce an engraving signal.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for adaptively controlling a system parameter, such as the temperature in an injection molding machine. In a preferred arrangement, the current status of the system is obtained by sampling the parameter a number of times and by making calculations based upon the samples taken, and then compared to data stored in a database or look-up table to determine whether the status has been encountered previously. The database also contains data corresponding to previous outputs and previous results obtained for each previous output. If the current status matches a previous status, an output is provided that is proportional to a previous output attempted, the proportion being based upon the response achieved by that previous output. If no match is found, an output is provided that is based upon a predetermined value. After the output is provided, a response to the output is monitored, and the current status, the output, and the response are saved for future use.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for filtering and stabilizing a signal by using a window value is provided. The signal is sampled and each sample of the signal is input to the method or apparatus and compared to the previous output. If the difference between the input sample and the previous output is less than the window value, then the previous output is provided as the next output. However, if the difference between the reference sample and the input sample is greater than the window value, then the input sample is provided as the next output. Thus, the method and apparatus provide a constant output until the difference between the input sample and that output is greater than the window value, at which time the input sample is provided as the new output. In a preferred application, the invention can be used as a digital filter and can be embodied in the form of software, such as, for example, a C program.

    Abstract: A method and system for controlling an in-home medical device, such as a drug delivery pump, wherein a control program or "prescription" for control of the device is encoded on a portable card, such as a smartcard. Accordingly, the card can be used on other medical devices without the need to reprogram the devices. In addition, the medical device is monitored and data relating to the device can be saved to the smartcard so that a paperless and portable record can be kept of the device operation. In the case of a drug delivery pump, the prescription dictates the rate of drug delivery, the frequency of drug delivery, and other variables associated with the treatment being provided. In addition, a security program is provided which ensures that only authorized patients can utilize the medical device. The program compares an access code stored on the patient card with an access code stored in the device memory and allows the device to operate if the codes match.

The method further provides that adjusting one or more of the engraving setup parameters in real units may be performed. Further, the method provides for multiplying either an AC input signal or a video signal by a multiplication factor which is generated by the setup circuit to produce the driving signal.
