Patent number: 8502159Abstract: Apparatuses and methods relating to generating an electric field are disclosed. An electric field generator may include a semiconductive material configured in a physical shape substantially different from a shape of an electric field to be generated thereby. The electric field is generated when a voltage drop exists across the semiconductive material. A method for generating an electric field may include applying a voltage to a shaped semiconductive material to generate a complex, substantially nonlinear electric field. The shape of the complex, substantially nonlinear electric field may be configured for directing charged particles to a desired location. Other apparatuses and methods are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2010Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: Battelle Energy Alliance, LLCInventors: Jill R. Scott, Timothy R. McJunkin, Paul L. Patent number: 7804029Abstract: A device and method for altering the line reactance of a transmission line having a transmission line, a first floating conductor and a grounding (shielding) conductor. The first floating conductor is positioned between and electrically insulated from the transmission line and the grounding conductor. A source and a load are connected at opposite ends of the transmission line.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2008Date of Patent: September 28, 2010Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Paul L Tremblay, Jill R Scott

Patent number: 7414241Abstract: A laser device includes a virtual source configured to aim laser energy that originates from a true source. The virtual source has a vertical rotational axis during vertical motion of the virtual source and the vertical axis passes through an exit point from which the laser energy emanates independent of virtual source position. The emanating laser energy is collinear with an orientation line. The laser device includes a virtual source manipulation mechanism that positions the virtual source. The manipulation mechanism has a center of lateral pivot approximately coincident with a lateral index and a center of vertical pivot approximately coincident with a vertical index. The vertical index and lateral index intersect at an index origin. The virtual source and manipulation mechanism auto align the orientation line through the index origin during virtual source motion.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2005Date of Patent: August 19, 2008Assignee: Battelle Energy Alliance, LLCInventors: Jill R. Scott, Paul L. Tremblay

Patent number: 7259369Abstract: Ion mobility spectrometer apparatus may include an ion interface that is operable to hold positive and negative ions and to simultaneously release positive and negative ions through respective positive and negative ion ports. A first drift chamber is operatively associated with the positive ion port of the ion interface and encloses an electric field therein. A first ion detector operatively associated with the first drift chamber detects positive ions from the first drift chamber. A second drift chamber is operatively associated with the negative ion port of the ion interface and encloses an electric field therein. A second ion detector operatively associated with the second drift chamber detects negative ions from said second drift chamber.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2005Date of Patent: August 21, 2007Assignee: Battelle Energy Alliance, LLCInventors: Jill R. Patent number: 7241990Abstract: A laser device includes a target position, an optical component separated a distance J from the target position, and a laser energy source separated a distance H from the optical component, distance H being greater than distance J. A laser source manipulation mechanism exhibits a mechanical resolution of positioning the laser source. The mechanical resolution is less than a spatial resolution of laser energy at the target position as directed through the optical component. A vertical and a lateral index that intersect at an origin can be defined for the optical component. The manipulation mechanism can auto align laser aim through the origin during laser source motion. The laser source manipulation mechanism can include a mechanical index. The mechanical index can include a pivot point for laser source lateral motion and a reference point for laser source vertical motion.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2004Date of Patent: July 10, 2007Assignee: Battelle Energy Alliance, LLCInventors: Jill R. Scott, Paul L. Tremblay

Patent number: 6711470Abstract: A system, method and apparatus is provided for monitoring and adjusting the quality of indoor air. A sensor array senses an air sample from the indoor air and analyzes the air sample to obtain signatures representative of contaminants in the air sample. When the level or type of contaminant poses a threat or hazard to the occupants, the present invention takes corrective actions which may include introducing additional fresh air. The corrective actions taken are intended to promote overall health of personnel, prevent personnel from being overexposed to hazardous contaminants and minimize the cost of operating the HVAC system. The identification of the contaminants is performed by comparing the signatures provided by the sensor array with a database of known signatures. Upon identification, the system takes corrective actions based on the level of contaminant present.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2000Date of Patent: March 23, 2004Assignee: Bechtel BWXT Idaho, LLCInventors: Steven D. Hartenstein, Paul L. Tremblay, Michael O. Fryer, Frederick A. Hohorst

Patent number: 5054018Abstract: An apparatus for simultaneous transmission of optic signals having different wavelengths over a single optic fiber. Multiple light signals are transmitted through optic fibers that are formed into a circumference surrounding a central core fiber. The multiple light signals are directed by a lens into a single receiving fiber where the light combines and is then focused into the central core fiber which transmits the light to a wavelength discriminating receiver assembly.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1990Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventor: Paul L.
