  • Patent number: 10816508
Abstract: A handheld pipeline inspection tool for inspecting a section of pipe. The tool includes two wings mounted to opposing sides of a central body using hinges. Each wing includes an excitation coil and is rotatable about the hinges so that the wings may be positioned around pipes of different sizes. Each excitation coil is energized by alternating current (AC) produced by an AC generator within the body. The energized excitation coils generate magnetic fields that interact with the section of pipe. An array of magnetometers within the body detects variations in the magnetic field due to the presence of defects within the adjacent section of pipe. In this fashion, the handheld pipeline inspection tool facilitates the inspection of pipelines in unusual configurations and hard to access conditions.

  • Patent number: 10746698
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods for inspecting a section of piping are disclosed. In one example embodiment, an apparatus includes first and second excitation coils, a plurality of magnetometers, and a data acquisition system. The first excitation coils are disposed at a first axial location and are energized with a first swept frequency waveform and the second excitation coils are disposed at a second axial location and are energized with the swept frequency waveform. The plurality of magnetometers are disposed at an axial location between the first and second axial locations and are positioned to detect magnetic fields generated by eddy currents induced in the section of piping by the first and second excitation coils. The data acquisition system is operatively connected to receive output data from the plurality of magnetometers.

  • Publication number: 20190219542
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods for inspecting a section of pipe are disclosed. The apparatuses includes a handheld pipeline inspection tool that includes a planar excitation coil within a pad and an array of magnetometers disposed within a box attached to the pad. The excitation coil is formed from a plurality of loops of conductive traces printed on printed circuit board within the pad and the excitation coil is energized with an alternating current received from a power source within the box. The energized excitation coil generates a magnetic field that interacts with the section of pipe and the magnetometer array is used to detect variations in the magnetic field due to the presence of defects within the section of pipe.

  • Publication number: 20190178844
Abstract: A system and methods for inspecting a section of pipe are disclosed. The system includes two excitation coils disposed circumferentially around the section of pipe and a ring of magnetometer pairs arranged around the pipe between the two excitation coils. Each excitation coil is energized by an alternating current received from a power source and the energized excitation coils generate magnetic fields within the section of pipe. Each magnetometer pair includes two sensors that detect the strengths of the two magnetic fields. The system detects the presence of defects within the section of pipe by comparing the strengths of the magnetic fields measured by the two sensors within each magnetometer pair in the ring of magnetometer pairs.

  • Publication number: 20030058991
Abstract: This is a system developed to inspect, interpret and evaluate welds on pipelines. It combines several different existing technologies into one powerful tool. The Digital Radioscopic Testing System combines an internal radiographic source mounted on an internal pipeline crawler, with a camera that is mounted on an external crawler that travels around the circumference of a pipe capturing a digital image of the weld. The digital image of the weld is transmitted to a personal computer with scanning software that can process, display, measure and enhance the image. Finally, the images are annotated and archived together with pertinent reporting data into one seamless, archived database for ease of storage and auditing.
