Patent number: 6867429Abstract: An array of discrete, microscopic particles in a substantially fixed spatial relationship with respect to each other is constructed by using an STM to position CO molecules on the (111) surface of a copper crystal. The particles of the array are arranged so that the array performs a logic operation (such as AND and OR) when input to the array is provided. This input takes the form of moving one or more of the particles, thereby triggering a cascade of motion through the array, which leads to output from the array. More generally, the array may be used to propagate motion by sequentially inducing movement of particles in the array.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2003Date of Patent: March 15, 2005Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Christopher Paul Lutz

Patent number: 6646250Abstract: A system and method for transferring information between spatially distinct points by modulating quantum states operatively coupling at least one transmitter and at least one receiver. In the preferred embodiment, fabrication of an elliptical quantum corral resonator on a length scale on the order of the electron wavelength enables the engineering of substantially confined quantum states as desired. A transmitter preferably located at a wavefunction antinode affects a modulation in the quantum states, and a receiver preferably located at a different wavefunction antinode detects the affected modulation in the spatially distributed quantum states. A second exemplary embodiment exploits the orthogonality of quantum wavefunctions to enable multiple channels of information to be transferred simultaneously through the same volume of space without crosstalk. Additional embodiments enable combinational processing of transferred information, which may be in any format, e.g.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2002Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Donald Mark Eigler, Christopher Paul Lutz, Harindran Chelvasekaran Manoharan

Patent number: 6527690Abstract: The invention relates to a process for purifying and decolorizing a phenyl ester salt. The process combines a phenyl ester salt with a solvent to form a mixture and then stirs the mixture to form a slurry. The phenyl ester salt is substantially insoluble in this solvent. The process then collects the phenyl ester salt from the slurry. The collected phenyl ester salt may then be optionally dried or recrystallized. The collected phenyl ester salt is dissolved in a solvent to form a solution. The solution is decolorized and then spray dried to form a powder of the phenyl ester salt. As a result of the process the phenyl ester salt powder has a higher purity and an improved color as compared to the starting phenyl ester salt.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2001Date of Patent: March 4, 2003Inventors: Bhaskar Krishna Arumugam, Michael Eugene Burns, Dimmick Lee Bymaster, Jeffrey Scott DuPont, Robert Richard Dykstra, Robert Lee Eagan, Eddie Joseph Eckart, Jarvey Eugene Felty, Jr., Kevin John Fontenot, Jeffrey William Green, Shane Kipley Kirk, Gary Paul Lutz, Tony Lee Sander, Thomas Hugh Williams, George Chester Zima

Patent number: 5717118Abstract: The present invention relates to a one-step process for preparing amido-carboxylic acid esters having the amide nitrogen positioned between two carbonyl carbons by reacting a carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid ester with a monohydric alcohol and either a lactam, amino-carboxylic acid or a polymeric amino-carboxylic acid. In this process, amidation, esterification, alcoholysis, and hydrolysis reactions occur simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1995Date of Patent: February 10, 1998Assignee: Eastman Chemical CompanyInventors: Gary Paul Lutz, George Chester Zima, Thomas Hugh Williams

Patent number: 5650527Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing amido ester compounds. The process involves (I) forming a mixture in a reactor of a phenol derivative and an amido-carboxylic acid at a temperature which ensures at least partial solubility of the phenol derivative and the amido-carboxylic acid, and (II) adding a carboxylic anhydride incrementally to the mixture formed in Step (I) while distilling a by-product carboxylic acid from the reactor. The amido esters are useful as bleach activators.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: July 22, 1997Assignee: Eastman Chemical CompanyInventors: Gary Paul Lutz, George Chester Zima, William Charles Dickason

Patent number: 4329256Abstract: A catalyst system of such high efficiency that the purification of the polymer can be dispensed with is obtained by first reacting a magnesium halide with an electron donor and/or a cyclopolyene, bringing the product obtained into contact with a TiCl.sub.3 -containing compound and using a stereoregulator. The system has a high stereospecificity whereby the proportion of atactic polymer is kept low. No excess amount of transition metal halides is required and the polymer obtained has uniform coarse particles and a very low halogen content. spThis is a continuation, of application Ser. No. 54,922 filed July 5, 1979, now abandoned.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1981Date of Patent: May 11, 1982Assignee: Hoechst AktiengesellschaftInventors: Kurt Rust, Ludwig Brinkmann, Paul Lutz
