Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for receiving by one or more servers, from a client device, a context of the client device. The servers may obtain, from a plurality of user interface object providers, a plurality of user interface objects. The servers may select and rank a set of the plurality of user interface objects based, at least in part, on the context of the client device. The servers may transmit the set of the plurality of user interface objects or information associated therewith to the client device according to the ranking of the set of user interface objects.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing a context-based user interface include obtaining one or more contextual factors associated with an electronic device; predicting context information in accordance with the one or more contextual factors; and formatting a user interface on the electronic device in accordance with the predicted context information. In some implementations, formatting the user interface on the electronic device in accordance with the predicted context information includes: selecting, in accordance with the predicted context information, a first set of applications; and formatting for display to the user the first set of applications as part of a user interface of the electronic device; and formatting the user interface includes: selecting, in accordance with the predicted context information, a second set of applications; and forgoing display to the user the second set of applications as part of the user interface of the electronic device.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for distributing content items to a handheld device using a personal computer. A user can browse and select content using a personal computer or other computer that may be more readily available or more convenient to use than the handheld device. The personal computer can communicate with a web server which receives the user's request for content to be distributed to the handheld device. The web server can retrieve configuration information pertaining to the handheld device and communicate with a content server to determine whether the user's request for content distribution is valid based on information identifying the handheld device and at least some of the configuration information pertaining to the handheld device. The content server can transmit the requested content item to the handheld device if the user's request is valid and if the handheld device is able to receive the content item.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for restricting access to content elements with content ratings. In one method, the content distributor can receive a request from a device to access a set of content elements. The content distributor can then identify at least a content descriptor and a content rating for each content element within the set of content elements, identify a range within the content ratings, and identify content elements with content ratings that are within the range. The content distributor can transmit at least the content descriptors for content elements having content ratings that are within the range to the device for display on the device. This permits a device user to access the content elements by content descriptor. In this method, at least some content descriptors for content elements having content ratings that are outside of the range are not transmitted to the device.
