  • Patent number: 7582375
Abstract: A method for severing a solid-oxide fuel cell bi-layer element including a structural anode and an electrolyte layer, comprising the steps of orienting the bi-layer element such that the surface thereof is accessible to laser treatment; impinging a laser beam on the electrolyte surface; moving the impinged laser beam past the surface along a path in a plane corresponding to the desired severed edge to form a groove in the element extending partially through the element to a predetermined depth; and applying a bending moment across the groove to cause the element to break into first and second portions. The groove depth is preferably about 15% of the total thickness of the element.

  • Patent number: 7280028
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a planar sensor, comprises disposing a film of a material on a substrate, wherein the material is selected from the group consisting of platinum, rhodium, palladium and mixtures and alloys comprising at least one of the foregoing materials; annealing the material; measuring a resistance value of the material; laser trimming the annealed material; heat treating the laser trimmed material; and laser trimming the heat treated material to form the sensor.

  • Patent number: 4689764
Abstract: A word or text processing system has a bidirectional printer with formatting capability. A line of text is printed in one direction, and the printer is backspaced to form complex characters by adding overstrikes, such as underlining or accent marks. The formatting unit includes a storage mechanism for storing encoded space images, including variable width spaces, in a first scan pass. Space images overlapped by a backspace are deleted from the storage mechanism during the scan pass, and the number of spaces backspaced over is subtracted from the total count of expandable spaces available for justification. Upon detecting a space in the input data during the format pass, the system examines the space storage mechanism to determine if the image of the space is encoded therein. A space is expanded for line justification only if the space is encoded in the space storage mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4463444
Abstract: A word processing system is provided having a bidirectional printer with formatting capability. The system includes a word processor having means for outputting a stream of sequential data readable in only one direction. The data comprises blocks of character data representative of the characters to be printed interspersed with blocks of control data representative of the format in which the characters are to be printed; each block of control data has an immediately preceding control block identifier. The bidirectional printer includes means for receiving the stream of sequential data, means for scanning the stream of data and means for inserting a control block identifier at the end of each control block which identifier corresponds to the identifier preceding the control block, whereby the stream of sequential data is made readable in both the forward and reverse directions within the printer.
