Patent number: 6127656Abstract: A portable electric soldering tool includes a housing forming a handle and a power head. A heating rod with a main and a secondary heating coil extends from the power head, the rod having an axial bore with a stainless steel lining to prevent solder from building up in the heating rod. A pump draws molten solder through the axial bore of the heating rod. A disposable solder collecting cartridge is removably mounted in the power head to collect solder drawn through the heating rod. The cartridge includes a barrel formed of a heat resistant plastic. Sealing gaskets are disposed at the open ends of the barrel, and a solder accumulator is disposed in the barrel to collect molten solder. The main and secondary heating coils are connected to a power switch. An electric motor for the pump is connected in series with the secondary heating coil. A selector switch energizes alternatively the main heating coil or the secondary heating coil and motor.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1999Date of Patent: October 3, 2000Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Paul R. Kilmer, Paul Louis Urban

Patent number: 6057527Abstract: The present invention is directed to a self-contained desoldering gun having a built-in vacuum pump. The vacuum pump is operated by a low voltage electric motor which is electrically connected in at least partial series with a heating tip. According to an exemplary embodiment of the invention a full wave bridge rectifier is used to supply power to the vacuum pump motor and a built-in vacuum pump while using a half-wave bridge rectifier to supply power to the heater. In exemplary embodiments, the vacuum pump is provided for drawing molten solder and when a trigger is activated the motor is subsequently energized and the output of the heating tip is increased.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1998Date of Patent: May 2, 2000Assignee: Cooper Technologies CompanyInventor: Paul R. Patent number: 5893992Abstract: A portable electric soldering tool includes a housing forming a handle and a power head. A heating rod extends from the power head, the rod having an axial bore with a stainless steel lining to prevent solder from building up in the heating rod. A heating coil heats the heating rod. The heating rod directs melted solder into an extraction tube in which a curved wafer is disposed to collect the solder. A diaphragm pump is mounted in the power head and has an oblong piston head, which is mounted with the long axis aligned on a longitudinal axis of the tool, which facilitates a more compact unit.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1997Date of Patent: April 13, 1999Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: Paul R. Patent number: 4751452Abstract: A portable power tool for forming wire wrap type connections includes an electric motor, a torque transmitter and a casing for enclosing the electric motor and the torque transmitter. Removably mounted to the casing is a battery pack. The battery pack mounts both rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries so that the battery charger may not be recharged in a physically compatible battery pack when non-rechargeable batteries are contained within the battery pack.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1987Date of Patent: June 14, 1988Assignee: Cooper IndustriesInventors: Paul R. Kilmer, David S. Chapin

Patent number: 4633921Abstract: A portable hand held pistol grip type conductor wrapping tool has a tool body with a forward projecting nose portion having a transverse face and a polygonal boss formed thereon for receiving a generally disk shaped mounting bracket for a conductor insulation stripping device. The mounting bracket has a polygonal recess complementary to and adapted to be supported on the boss in one of a plurality of circumferentially spaced working positions with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tool. A threaded nose projection extends forwardly from the boss for receiving a not and resilient "o" ring type gasket for retaining the mounting bracket rigidly secured on the tool body in its selected working position.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1985Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: Paul R. Patent number: 4620574Abstract: A manually-operated terminal wire connecting tool having an eccentric cam pivot for adjusting the degree of contact between gear rack assembly and rotating drive assembly. The eccentric cam allows for selective adjustment of contact between gear rack and rotatable drive assembly. Machining tolerances in manufacture of the tools are thereby increased and, in addition, consumers can compensate for gear wear over the life of the tool.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1985Date of Patent: November 4, 1986Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: Paul R. Kilmer

Patent number: 4597453Abstract: A drive unit for a power tool has a motor driven output gear rotatable about an output axis, a rotatable carrier plate, and a plurality of idler gears rotatably mounted on pins affixed to the carrier plate such that the gears engage the periphery of the output gear. The unit includes a drive shaft supported at one end by the carrier plate, and a non-rotatable ring gear floatingly mounted for engagement with the idler gears, whereby rotation of the output gear is coupled to the drive shaft, and hence to the tool bit, through the carrier plate and the carrier plate is urged toward rotational alignment with the axis of the output gear through the action of rotational forces.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1985Date of Patent: July 1, 1986Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Paul R. Kilmer, David S. Chapin

Patent number: 4284109Abstract: In a hand-held power tool (10) for wrapping conductor around an electrical terminal, a drive means (14, 34 and 42) is selectively engaged with a clutch (58) mounted on a drive shaft (44) journaled within index means (62) in axial arrangement within a case (12). The drive means (14, 34 and 42) and index means (62) are secured to the case (12) by means of circular tongue and groove structure of radially stepped configuration. Resilient ring members (60) are frictionally engaged between the drive means (14, 34 and 42) and the drive shaft (44) to provide for gradual arrest of the drive means after disengagement of the clutch means (58) and stoppage of the drive shaft by the index means (62). A trigger (22) within the case (12) controls actuation of the drive means (14, 34 and 42) and engagement of the clutch means (58) therewith.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1979Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Paul R.
