  • Publication number: 20020151648
Abstract: An aqueous coating composition comprising a comb copolymer is disclosed. A method of forming a coating from the aqueous coating composition, and a coating formed by that method are also disclosed, as is a method of forming the comb copolymer. The comb copolymer is characterized in that aqueous dispersions of the comb copolymer have a Hard/Soft Balance Advantage value of at least 25%. The aqueous coating composition is capable of producing coatings having an excellent balance of hard and soft properties.

  • Publication number: 20020120050
Abstract: An aqueous dispersion of a segmental copolymer, wherein the aqueous dispersion has a Hard/Soft Balance Advantage value of at least 25% is disclosed. A method for preparing the aqueous dispersion of a segmental copolymer is also disclosed, as is a film produced thereby.

  • Patent number: 5502089
Abstract: A crosslinkable polymeric emulsion has a pH from about 1.5 to about 8.5 and includes a carboxyl-substituted latex polymer dispersed in an aqueous medium, an Iron (III) compound and an amount of a stabilizer, selected from the group consisting of nonionic surfactants and protective colloids, effective to sterically stabilize the emulsion. A method for making a crosslinked polymer film includes forming a layer of the crosslinkable polymer emulsion and drying the layer to form the crosslinked polymer film wherein the film is ionically crosslinked between carboxyl substituent groups of the polymer by Iron (III) cations. A crosslinking agent for carboxyl-substituted polymers includes particles of a water-insoluble Iron (III) compound having an average maximum characteristic linear dimension of less than or equal to about 5 microns.

  • Patent number: 5312863
Abstract: A novel coating composition, exhibiting improved adhesion to anionic substrates and a process for its preparation and use, is disclosed. The coating contains an aqueous dispersion of a cationic polymeric binder. The polymeric binder is preferably prepared by the polymerization of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, having amine functionality, in the presence of at least one nonionic or amphoteric surfactant, followed by the subsequent neutralization of the polymer using selected acids. Coatings containing the cationic latex polymeric binder and selected cationic pigment dispersants are provided.
