  • Publication number: 20040225296
Abstract: Devices and methods compress cancellous bone. In one arrangement, the devices and methods make use of an expandable body that includes an internal restraint coupled to the body. The internal restraint directs expansion of the body. In one arrangement, a method for treating bone inserts the device having the internal restraint inside bone and causes directed expansion of the body in cancellous bone. Cancellous bone is compacted by the directed expansion.

  • Publication number: 20040092948
Abstract: A balloon for use in compressing cancellous bone and marrow (also known as medullary bone or trabecular bone). The balloon comprises an inflatable balloon body for insertion into said bone. The body has a shape and size to compress at least a portion of the cancellous bone to form a cavity in the cancellous bone and/or to restore the original position of the outer cortical bone, if fractured or collapsed. The balloon desirably incorporates restraints which inhibit the balloon from applying excessive pressure to various regions of the cortical bone. The wall or walls of the balloon are such that proper inflation of the balloon body is achieved to provide for optimum compression of the bone marrow. The balloon can be inserted quickly into a bone. The balloon can be made to have a suction catheter. The balloon can be used to form and/or enlarge a cavity or passage in a bone, especially in, but not limited to, vertebral bodies.

  • Publication number: 20030182147
Abstract: A method and system for administering a benefit plan for a sponsor with a widely diverse participant population. Using a combination of Internet enabled tools and databases, participants can enter and confirm their own data. Plan sponsors can view that information with reference to plan parameters and guidelines coded into the benefit plan. Databases contain the plan choices, sponsor's rules, and who has access to which information. The system computes liabilities owed by the sponsor, assets used to informally fund those liabilities, and cost recovery opportunities, if any. The browser enabled system uses the advantages of the Worldwide Web (and any thin-client intranet on the sponsor's site) as its primary contact tool, with alternatives of telephone, modem, or fax. Financial information is provided to the plan sponsor as participants make choices, provides payout options to the participants, and provides considerably more interactivity than prior methods of servicing employee benefits.

  • Patent number: 6582394
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for stenting bifurcated vessels. A main-vessel stent and delivery system is provided for implanting a stent in the main vessel of a bifurcated vessel, wherein the main-vessel stent has an aperture bordered by closed stent cells that aligns with the opening to a side-branch vessel to permit substantially unobstructed blood flow between the main vessel and the side-branch vessel. The delivery system includes a catheter assembly having distal and proximal balloons separated by a positioning guide wire exit port located at the distal end of the catheter. The catheter assembly is advanced over a pair of guide wires for delivering, appropriately orienting, and implanting the main-vessel stent.

  • Publication number: 20030088209
Abstract: A multi-lumen balloon for use in a fluted balloon centering catheter and method for providing the same. The multi-lumen balloon maintains a radiation source at the center of a cardiovascular artery, has improved blood perfusion capability, and has improved balloon refolding characteristics. The method of fabricating a multi-lumen balloon designed for a radiation centering catheter uses an improved extrusion process that allows the manufacture of the multi-lumen balloon sub-assembly to be done separately from the catheter shaft assembly.

  • Publication number: 20020138388
Abstract: A method and system for tracking the compliance of a portfolio account used to finance benefit obligations containing a plurality of assets distributed among at least one fund category, containing at least one investment vehicle, such as cash, stocks, bonds, insurance policies, is disclosed. The method monitors the balance of assets included in selected investment vehicles, e.g., stocks, equities, and relates them to new or modified liability allocations. The method identifies a liability balance associated with selected ones of the investment vehicles within each of the fund categories, identifies an asset balance associated with the value of equities in the account and divests a portion of selected investment vehicles when the asset balance is in violation of a known regulation with regard to the liability balance. The method further provides an indication for reporting when the asset balance is within the known relation to the liability balance as required by appropriate regulations.
