  • Patent number: 6708686
Abstract: A tile cutter includes a base having a support surface upon which tiles to be cut may be supported, a pair of guide rails mounted upon the base, the guide rails being parallel to one another and being spaced from the support surface to enable a tile to be located between the guide rails and the support surface. A cutter assembly is provided, mounted on a carriage, which, in turn, is movably mounted on the pair of rails so as to guide the cutter assembly along a rectilinear path across the support surface. The carriage includes a first rotary bearing assembly in rotary contact with one rail and a second rotary bearing assembly in rotary contact with the other rail.

  • Patent number: 5637036
Abstract: An adapter (11) is of channel shape, having longitudinal projections (25) at its respective sides for engagement with undercut grooves (24) in a face of a casing of a powered grinding tool (10) with which the adapter is intended to be fitted to sharpened chisels or other planar blades, in use, by means of a grinding wheel (20) of the tool. The adapter has an angularly adjustable guide plate (63) which carrier a slidable plate (70) having magnetic means (71a) for holding an attracted blade of an implement to be sharpened, the angle of the guide plate (63) causing the blade to be correctly sharpened by the wheel (20), in use, as the plate (70) is reciprocated across the wheel with the blade held correctly thereon.

  • Patent number: 5620363
Abstract: A powered grinding tool (10) comprising a casing (16) in which is an electric motor (40) which drives a shaft (39) on which is carried a grinding wheel (20) at a work station. The tool casing has undercut slots (24) at opposite sides of its front face for automatic vertical sliding engagement with a selected one of a number of adapters (11-13), each adapter providing a location which, in use, is disposed relative to the grinding wheel so that there is correct positioning between part of an implement that said location and the grinding wheel, for said part to be worked by the wheel. The casing can have the slots (24) on at least one other of its faces to store adapters when they are not in use.

  • Patent number: 5618028
Abstract: An adapter (12) is of channel shape having longitudinal projections (25) at its respective sides for engagement with undercut grooves (24) in a face of a casing of a powered grinding tool (10) with which the adapter is intended to be fitter to sharpen high speed drill fits, in use, by means of a grinding wheel (20) of the tool. The adapter has a rearwardly directed head (76) at its top, the head having a rotatable dial (85) mounted therein which is provided with a multiplicity of differently sized drill bit receiving openings (87), so that, in use, by angularly moving the dial, the opening for a particular size of drill bit can be brought to a location where the drill bit can be inserted in the hole and correctly worked by the grinding wheel, when the adapted is fitted to the tool.

  • Patent number: 5483749
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting tiles or similar items to size comprises a measuring device having first and second measuring members which are movable towards and away from each other to set a required size to which a tile is to be cut, a cutting device comprising a base, a cutter, and a guide for guiding movement of the cutter along a defined path across the base, and a formation on the base to receive the first measuring member of the measuring device and to position the same in alignment with the defined path, whereby a tile placed in edge contact with the second measuring member of the measuring device is automatically positioned for cutting substantially to the required size by the cutter. The formation preferably comprises a recess in the base, such that when received in the recess an upper surface of the first measuring member lies substantially flush with an upper surface of the base.

  • Patent number: 5288189
Abstract: A fixing device includes a sleeve portion and an engagement portion which are spaced apart but which are interconnected by two flexible strut members, each of which includes short and long arms. A screw can be inserted through a central bore in the sleeve portion so that its end engages a bore in the engagement portion to initially hold the engagement portion in a fixed position relative to the sleeve portion and thereby resist flexing movement of the strut members. Upon subsequent tightening of the screw, the sleeve and engagement portions are caused to move together, thereby flexing the strut members outwardly.

  • Patent number: 4922886
Abstract: A tile 14 to be parted along a pre scored parting line is grasped between a pair of elements 36 which contact one surface of the tile on either side of the line, and a further element 30 which contacts the opposite surface of the tile on the line itself. Downward pressure on a handle member 26 then causes a jaw member 28 on which the element 30 is mounted to pivot about a fixed axis 18 to apply a parting pressure to the tile. In order to adjust the starting position of the element 30 to suit different thicknesses of tile, the member 28 is carried on a cam member 20 so that it can be rotated about a second axis which is eccentrically disposed relative to the axis 18.

  • Patent number: 4666354
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a fixing device for securing fasteners such as bolts into concrete or other similar material. The device comprises a sleeve member (2, 4) having a block portion (6) in which a nut (14) is set. The block portion (6) has a frusto-conical extension portion (16) joined by shearable links (18) to an intermediate portion (20) of the member which has an internal frusto-conical surface (22) complementing the extrusion portion (16) of the block portion. Tightening the bolt shears the links in the usual way. According to the present invention the device is moulded in two longitudinally divided portions (2) and (4), hinged together by a plastics hinge (10) adjacent the block portion (6). In the as-moulded conditions the portions (2, 4) are arranged end-to-end, but are hinged together to form the device ready for use.

  • Patent number: 4660273
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for stripping an insulation sheath from an end portion of a cable. The device comprises two manually graspable handles (10,11) which are capable of relative movement towards and away from one another, a pair of jaws (14,17) which move towards one another during a first, rotary, part of relative movement of the handles towards each other to grip a cable (C) placed in use between said jaws and a pair of cutter blades (24) disposed adjacent to the jaws and which move towards one another during said first, rotary, part of the handle movement thereby to cut through an outer insulating sheath of said cable, the cutter blades (24) during a second, rectilinear, part of said relative movement of the handles (10,11), moving away from the jaws (14,17) to strip the outer sheath from the cable. It has been found particularly advantageous that the second part of the movement is approximately parallel in direction to the longitudinal center line of the cutter blades.

  • Patent number: 4349059
Abstract: The invention relates to a blade holder of the hacksaw type which comprises a C-shaped portion spanned by a blade having a conventional pair of projections being receivable in a slot having a cruciform or T-slot in one arm of the C-shape and the other pair in a similar slot formed in a lever pivotted to the other arm. Movement of the lever from a loading position to an operative position imparts tension to the blade and in the example shown, involves movement into an over-center condition of the lever with respect to its pivotal mounting. The lever has an abutment surface projecting outwardly from its end portion adjacent the pivotal mounting so as to contact the second arm member when the lever is in its loading position to thereby act as an end stop.
