  • Patent number: 4826463
Abstract: Improved bonding in a cathode ray tube (CRT) between its glass funnel and glass faceplate is achieved by applying a thin base layer of a priming agent to an aft portion of the faceplate adjacent to the periphery thereof as well as to the forward edge of the funnel prior to positioning of the CRT components in contact. An intermediate layer of sealing glass frit is then deposited upon either of the aforementioned layers of the priming agent and adheres to the two priming agent layers without forming a re-entrant geometry. By "priming" the two abutting glass surfaces over an area which extends beyond the area of high loading with the priming agent prior to joining these surfaces, bond integrity is ensured and high stress concentration in the seal is avoided. The sealing glass frit may be comprised of a conventional glass cement paste and is also used as the priming agent in a preferred embodiment.

  • Patent number: 4686416
Abstract: A front assembly for a color cathode tube is disclosed. The tube faceplate has on its inner surface a centrally disposed screen area for receiving process materials during the spin-application process. The front assembly has a shadow mask support structure secured to the inner surface of the faceplate on opposed sides of the screen area. The structure has a first surface for receiving and securing a foil shadow mask, and a second surface inclined from the first surface to the screen area effective to conduct from the screen area any excess of coating material applied during the spin-application process. As a result, discontinuities in phosphor application visible to the viewer, and non-adherence of phosphor resulting in wash-off and flake-off, are avoided. An embodiment is also shown in which electrical connection is made between a mask support structure and a screen.

  • Patent number: 4686415
Abstract: A support frame for supporting a tensed mask adjacent to a flat panel tube and wholly within the tube includes an outer flange, a shelf extending from the flange parallel to the flat panel and providing a support surface for the tensed mask and a skirt directed away from the flat panel and adapted to join with the remainder of the tube. The configuration provides a very rigid support frame for resisting deformation when not bonded to the other tube elements, such as during screening of the panel when the support frame alone bears the forces exerted by the tensed mask.

  • Patent number: 4656388
Abstract: A tensed mask cathode ray tube has a support frame supporting a tensed mask adjacent to a flat or cylindrical panel wholly within the tube. The support frame includes an outer flange, a shelf extending radially inwardly from the flange and providing a support surface for the tensed mask, and an elongated skirt directed rearwardly from the shelf and adapted to join to the remainder of the CRT. The support frame forms a major part of the CRT envelope and includes strengthening ribs extending from the outer flange to the elongated skirt. The support frame resists deformation by tensile forces exerted by the tensed mask and discontinuity stresses imposed by the flat panel upon tube evacuation. The Q-distance between the mask support surface and the inner surface of the flat panel is determined by the support surface being offset from the seal surface.

  • Patent number: 4652791
Abstract: A color cathode ray tube comprises an envelope including a faceplate portion having on an inner surface a pattern of cathodoluminescent phosphors deposited thereon. The envelope includes a continuous peripheral support surface within the envelope spaced approximately a predetermined distance from the inner surface of the faceplate. The tube has a tensed foil aperture mask cemented to the support surface by cement means. The mask blank has a first field of apertures in coordinate relationship to the pattern of cathodoluminescent phosphors for color selection. A second field of apertures peripheral to the first field, and coordinate with the support surface, provides for receiving cementing means during assembly of the blank into a cathode ray tube. The apertures have the form of a band of substantially uniform width at least along the sides of the blank, and are small in diameter relative to the width of the band.
