Patent number: 6957068Abstract: A system for providing a dynamic multi-mode service acquisition capability to a subscriber station is provided. The subscriber station is capable of operating in two or more modes of operation. A time to scan condition is indicated while the subscriber station is operating in a current mode of operation having active and inactive states. Responsive thereto, the system stores state information for the current mode of operation, and attempts at least a partial acquisition of communications services in accordance with another mode of operation. The at least partial acquisition attempt is scheduled to be initiated while the subscriber station is operating in the inactive state in the current mode of operation, and completed before the subscriber station transitions back to the active state in the current mode of operation. If the acquisition attempt is successful, the subscriber station transitions to the new mode of operation, maintaining appropriate registration.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2002Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: Qualcomm, IncorporatedInventors: James A. Hutchison, IV, Rotem Cooper, Paul T. Williamson

Patent number: 6584311Abstract: A system for facilitating the acquisition of a most desirable wireless service for a wireless phone. The system includes a scanning mechanism for periodically scanning for a signal indicative of a wireless service having a coverage area that overlaps one or more coverage areas of other wireless services. A service acquisition mechanism acquires the wireless service or one of the other wireless services based on predetermined selection criteria and the signal. More specifically, the present invention includes a wireless phone having a first mechanism for determining if a detected system, i.e., service is associated with a coverage area that overlaps one or more coverage areas of different systems. A second mechanism compares the different systems to the detected system and selects a preferred system based on the comparison. A third mechanism acquires the preferred system.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2000Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: John R. Sorenson, Baaziz Achour, Jan C. Patent number: 6516188Abstract: A method and apparatus for acquiring an emergency service from one or more candidate mobile radio communication systems. An attempt is made by the mobile radio unit to acquire normal non-emergency service. If the attempt of acquiring normal non-emergency services fails and the user needs to originate an emergency call, an emergency scan list containing one or more candidate mobile radio communication systems is scanned, and an attempt is made to acquire emergency service from one of these systems. The emergency scan list is different from the normal preferred roaming list stored in the mobile radio unit. Next, the invention originates an emergency call in accordance with the service acquired from the emergency scan list.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1999Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Wen J. Publication number: 20020155858Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a communication system in accordance with the geographic region in which the subscriber station is located is described. Upon successful acquisition, a system determination processor examines the received system identification information and compares it with system identification information stored in a universal system table to determine the geographical region of the identified communication system. The system determination processor then determines whether the acquired system is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region. If it is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the system determination processor selects the acquired system for providing service. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station attempts to acquire a more desirable system using information from the universal system table.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 30, 2002Publication date: October 24, 2002Inventors: Robert D. Blakeney, Paul T. Williamson, Jan C. Ault, John R. Sorenson

Patent number: 6320849Abstract: Microprocessor resource utilization by a searching process are controlled by determining a search window size, accessing a lookup table to determine an integration interval and a number of non-coherent passes, and commanding a searching process to execute a multipath search according to these parameters. The lookup table comprises a plurality of integration intervals and corresponding number of non-coherent passes indexed according to search window such that an execution duration of the search process remains nominally constant over a variety of search window sizes.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1999Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Robbin D. Patent number: 6085085Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a communication system in accordance with the geographic region in which the subscriber station is located. Upon successful acquisition, the subscriber station examines the received system identification information to determine its geographical region. The subscriber station then determines whether the acquired system is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region. If it is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station provides service using the acquired system. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station attempts to acquire a more desirable system.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1996Date of Patent: July 4, 2000Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Robert D. Patent number: 5953320Abstract: The wireless communication device receives a neighbor list message from a first base station. The neighbor list message includes a respective base station configuration parameter for each of a plurality of base stations. In response to the neighbor list message, the wireless communication device constructs a neighbor list table, including one record for each of the plurality of base stations, with each record including their respective base station configuration parameter. After handing off to a second base station, the wireless communication device replaces the record for the second base station with a corresponding record for the first base station. The wireless communication device then may change the respective base station configuration parameter for at least one of the records of the plurality of base stations in the neighbor list table to match the base station configuration parameter of the second base station.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1997Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Paul T. Williamson, Don N. Andrus, Jan C. Ault, Scott M. Owen

Patent number: 5907813Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for signal acquisition in a wireless telecommunication system having large transmission delay uncertainty is described. A terminal first acquires the forward link signal from a hub and extracts timing information from that forward link signal. Using the timing information the terminal estimates the time at which a next search window takes place during an access slot, and the time and pseudorandom code state necessary to transmit an access probe so as to arrive at during the search window assuming the terminal is located a maximum distance from the hub. The terminal proceeds to transmit additional access probes at times occurring one access slot period plus a delta time interval after the previous transmission. The delta time interval has a duration less than that of a search window associated with each access slot.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1995Date of Patent: May 25, 1999Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Derald O. Johnson, Jr., Paul T. Williamson, James A. Hutchison, IV, Gwain Bayley

Patent number: 5490165Abstract: In a receiver having a plurality of demodulation elements, a method of assigning the plurality of demodulation element so a set of available signals. A first method emphasizes diversity of transmitting devices so that power control is optimal. A second method emphasizes the maximum signal strength available to produce aggregate maximum signal strength. Both methods control the number of reassignments so that excessive data is not lost during the reassignment process. The apparatus comprises the plurality of demodulation elements, at least one searcher element, and a controller.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1993Date of Patent: February 6, 1996Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Robert D.
