  • Patent number: 9232430
Abstract: A method of controlling the volume of user-plane traffic on the Iub or Iub/Iur interface between a Radio Network Controller and a Node B of a UMTS Radio Access Network during periods of overload. The method comprises, for individual uplink or downlink connections established over the Iub or Iub/Iur interface, monitoring at the Radio Network Controller the late arrival of frames at the Radio Network Controller or at the Node B transmitted over the Iub or Iub/Iur interface, and based on the results of said monitoring, causing a reduction in the Iub or Iub/Iur load for a connection when appropriate.

  • Publication number: 20070183427
Abstract: Methods and apparatus provide access control to a femto radio base station (28f) of a radio access network (24). The radio access network (24) maintains a database (44) of allowed user equipment units which are to be permitted access for use of a femto radio base station (28f). The database (44) is consulted and used to determine if a candidate user equipment (30) unit attempting to use the femto radio base station (28f) for access to the radio access network (24) is to be given access. In some implementations, the candidate user equipment unit (30) is permitted to use the femto radio base station (28f) only if the candidate user equipment unit is an allowed user equipment unit as determined by the database (44). In some implementations, if the candidate user equipment unit (30) is not an allowed user equipment unit as determined by the database (44), the candidate user equipment unit is redirected to another frequency, or to another cell, or to another radio access technology network.

  • Publication number: 20070097983
Abstract: Methods and apparatus enable a femto radio base station (28f) to be connected to an appropriate radio network controller node (26) of a radio access network (24) for use as an active radio network controller node for the femto radio base station. The connection is accomplished the femto radio base station (28f) preparing a node address inquiry and for using the node address inquiry for obtaining an internet protocol (IP) address of an appropriate radio network controller node. The femto radio base station (28f) further uses the internet protocol (IP) address of an appropriate radio network controller node for connecting to the appropriate radio network controller node as its active radio network controller node.

  • Publication number: 20070037593
Abstract: The present invention relates to an architectural model of a radio network unit, e.g. a Radio Base Station, that separates functionality in such a way that it is possible to easily adapt the unit to various requirements and conditions. The radio network unit comprises an internal RBS-interface that subdivides the its functionality into a first part, which solely relates to the functionality of the radio network, and a second part, which solely relates to the radio part, i.e. the airborne part of the transmission. The internal interface comprises at least a link that handles the necessary additional communication that arises due to the subdivision and a link that handles the user data that is to be processed, i.e. transmitted or received, by said unit.

  • Patent number: 6400966
Abstract: A base transceiver station for a mobile communications system is disclosed, which is divided into a plurality of functional units that enables the signal processing resources to be flexibly allocated and cost-effectively implemented in hardware. A flexible communications interface is created between the base transceiver station units which allows the signal processing resources within the units to be used more efficiently. Essentially, the base transceiver station hardware is dimensioned to statistically distribute the signal processing resources among the different radio transmission services available. Consequently, the allocated base transceiver station hardware can be used more efficiently, which minimizes the overall size and weight of the base station.

  • Patent number: 5946345
Abstract: A receiver device (703) downspreads signals from a band spreading signal, which generates downspread symbol sequences (803). A vector generator (704) generate symbol vectors (805) which include a symbol from each downspread symbol sequence (803). An auxiliary receiver (705) detects symbol vectors (805) in a first window (809) with the length of one symbol time. The auxiliary receiver (705) generates provisional estimates of the symbol vectors (805) with the help of a device with a first window algorithm (811). A delaying module (706) delays the symbol vectors (805) from the vector generator (704) by one symbol time before they reach a main receiver (707). The main receiver (707) detects in a second window (806) the symbol vectors (805) with the length of one symbol time.

  • Patent number: 5946357
Abstract: Apparatus and associated method for improving the radio link performance of a radio communication system, such as a cellular communication system. Multi-stage encoding and interleaving of the data bits of a digital information signal is performed at a single logical device, such as a radio base station. By performing two stages of interleaving over the same number of information frames of the data bits, only a single buffering stage is required to perform such multi-stage interleaving.

  • Patent number: 5828659
Abstract: A mobile station can be connected to more than one base station in a procedure known as macro-diversity. In order to synchronize the signals for a specific cellular call connection, the time difference between the connected base station's signal and a macro-diversity candidate base station's signal is measured by a mobile station. This measurement is then transmitted to the network. The measurements can be used to achieve synchronization via frame staggering.
