Patent number: 8007622Abstract: Apparatus and methods for manufacturing personal care absorbent articles. Such personal care absorbent article includes a fastening area in the front portion for receiving fastener material thereon. First and second fault lines are formed on opposing sides of the fastening area leaving uncut web portions at the fault lines during selected manufacturing operations, thus to support machine direction stresses on the front portion web, and subsequently trimming away such uncut web portions of the fault lines. Fastener material is applied over the first and second fault lines, thus bridging the fault lines. The fastener material is releasably secured to the fastening area, non-releasably secured to the front portion outwardly of the respective fault lines, and unsecured to the front portion between the fastening area and the fault lines thus to support a re-fastening feature of such personal care absorbent articles.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2008Date of Patent: August 30, 2011Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Harold Norbert Heller, Donald Joseph Sanders, Paul Theodore Van Gompel, Lori Sue Schutkoske, Cindy Lou Price, Suzanne Marie Schmoker, Sarah Jane Marie Freiburger, Mary Anne Bruemmer-Prestley, Paul William Christoffel

The first and second end panels are stretchable in at least the lateral direction of the garment. The side panels extend longitudinally between the first and second end panels in laterally spaced relationship with each other such that the end panels and side panels together define a central opening of the inner layer. The side panels are each secured to the first and second end panels and are extensible in at least the lateral direction of the garment. The garment includes an outer layer is in opposed relationship with the inner layer and an absorbent assembly disposed between the inner layer and the outer layer.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2005Date of Patent: August 31, 2010Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Paul Theodore Van Gompel, Gary Alan Krueger, Lu Ann Marie Beckman

Patent number: 6884310Abstract: The present invention provides a method of achieving selectively elasticized zones on nonwoven web substrates, such as may be suitable for the waistbands of disposable absorbent pant garments, cuffs on sleeves of medical garments, or the like. A web, or webs, of nonwoven material which make up the substrate for the elasticized area are provided to be inherently extendable in the transverse, or lateral, direction of the material web at the time the elastic material is affixed to the substrate. If the elastic material is affixed in an untensioned state, a flat waistband without gathering of the substrate may be had for a very efficient seal against the skin of the wearer. If the elastic material is affixed to the substrate in a tensioned state, a waist band with gathering of the substrate may be had to allow for two-stage expansion via the gathers and the expansion of the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2001Date of Patent: April 26, 2005Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Thomas Harold Roessler, Michael Tod Morman, Paul Theodore Van Gompel

Publication number: 20020138059Abstract: A personal care article including a resiliently stretchable outer cover and a substantially nonelastomeric grasping panel attached to the front portion of the article. The outer cover is resiliently stretchable in at least the cross-direction to conform to the body of a wearer. The grasping panel has a sufficient stiffness to allow a user to properly fasten a fastening apparatus onto a landing zone. The stiffness of the grasping panel is sufficient to prevent roll-up or wrinkling of the grasping panels or the front portion of the personal care article. The stiffness of the grasping is not too large such that the comfort of the wearer is compromised. In one embodiment the absorbent structure is secured to the outer cover by extendible attachment elements and the bodyside liner is not secured to the outer cover. In another embodiment the bodyside liner is extensible in at least the cross-direction and secured about the periphery to the outer cover.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 14, 2002Publication date: September 26, 2002Applicant: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Paul Theodore Van Gompel, Yung Hsiang Huang, Georgia Lynn Zehner

Patent number: 6193701Abstract: A personal care article includes a resiliently stretchable outer cover. In a first embodiment, a first zone of the outer cover is embossed forming a pattern of embossments providing a first set of desired properties pertaining to stretch of a portion of the outer cover. A second zone of the outer cover is not modified to provide the first set of properties and thus has different stretch properties than the first zone. In a second embodiment, a first panel is secured to a resiliently extensible second panel. A first zone of the second panel can have a pattern of embossments securing the second panel to the first panel. The embossments cause the first zone to have different stretch properties than a second zone of the second panel that is not embossed thereby to impart the set of stretch properties. In a third embodiment the second panel is pre-stretched to a predetermined degree of elongation before securement to the first panel.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1997Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Paul Theodore Van Gompel, Yung Hsiang Huang, Georgia Lynn Zehner
