Patent number: 8918624Abstract: A method, computer program product and computer system for scaling and managing requests on a massively parallel machine, such as one running in MIMD mode on a SIMD machine. A submit mux (multiplexer) is used to federate work requests and to forward the requests to the management node. A resource arbiter receives and manges these work requests. A MIMD job controller works with the resource arbiter to manage the work requests on the SIMD partition. The SIMD partition may utilize a mux of its own to federate the work requests and the computer nodes. Instructions are also provided to control and monitor the work requests.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2008Date of Patent: December 23, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Paul V. Allen, Thomas A. Budnik, Mark G. Megerian, Samuel J. Miller

Patent number: 8656369Abstract: A method is provided for tracing dataflow in a distributed computing application. For example, the method includes incrementally advancing a dataflow in a dataflow path of one or more dataflow paths according to two or more directives encoded in two or more data messages. The method further includes performing the two or more directives. The dataflow path includes one or more operators including at least one merge operator operative to merge the two or more data messages and merge the two or more directives. One or more of the incrementally advancing of the dataflow and the performing of the two or more directives are implemented as instruction code performed on a processor device.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2010Date of Patent: February 18, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Paul V. Patent number: 8225324Abstract: A method for resource management on a computer system utilizing hardware and environmental information. A caller interacts with an application program interface to handle information requests with a persistent data storage device to combine information involving hardware resource information, environmental data and other system information, all both historical, present and predicted values. Application execution decisions may then made regarding hardware for the calling entity. The method may be implemented as a computer process.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2008Date of Patent: July 17, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Paul V. Allen, Thomas A. Patent number: 7439419Abstract: Nucleic acid sequences from potato that encode the enzyme ?-solanine/?-chaconine rhamnosyltransferase (SGT3) are disclosed. Recombinant DNA molecules containing the sequences, and use thereof, in particular, use of the sequences and antisense constructs to inhibit the production of SGT3 and thereby reduce levels of the predominant steroidal glycoalkaloids ?-chaconine and ?-solanine in Solanaceous plants such as potato are described.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2005Date of Patent: October 21, 2008Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of AgricultureInventors: Kent F. McCue, Paul V. Allen, David R. Rockhold, Louise V. T. Shepherd, Mary M. Maccree, Howard V. Davies, William R. Belknap

Patent number: 7375259Abstract: Nucleic acid sequences from potato that encode the enzyme UDP-glucose:solanidine glucosyltransferase (SGT2) are disclosed. Recombinant DNA molecules containing the sequences, and use thereof, in particular, use of the sequences and antisense constructs to inhibit the production of SGT2 and thereby reduce the level of the more human-toxic of the two predominant steroidal glycoalkaloids ?-chaconine and/or increase the level of the more insect-toxic ?-solanine in Solanaceous plants such as potato are described.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2005Date of Patent: May 20, 2008Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of AgricultureInventors: Kent F. Patent number: 6658625Abstract: The preferred embodiments of the present invention provide a method and apparatus for generic data conversion. A generic data convertor interprets a data description that has configurable data definitions that can accommodate changes in the data. The data definitions can allow the data type, character set, location, and length of data elements in the data stream or file to be described and easily modified. The data convertor uses the data description to determine how to convert the data and, if necessary, where data elements are in the data. The data convertor is particularly useful for converting data that is sent to and/or received from a server. The data convertor and data description cooperate to support calling multiple releases of the server using the same data description. In addition, the data convertor may also call the server program with the correct, converted parameters in the correct order.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1999Date of Patent: December 2, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Paul V. Patent number: 5940614Abstract: A hypertext network and a method for displaying user selectable information modules in a hypertext network are provided for use in an interactive data processing system. The hypertext network includes a plurality of user selectable information modules. At least some of the modules include a link reference phrase to an other user selectable target module. Responsive to a user selection input, a link reference phrase to an other user selectable target module is identified in a selected information module. The availability of the other user selectable target module corresponding to the identified link reference phrase is determined and the identified reference phrase link is selectively activated or deactivated responsive to the determined availability of other user selectable target module. The identified reference phrase link can be selectively activated or deactivated based upon user class or user authority.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1991Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Paul V. Patent number: 5191801Abstract: A sampling pump is provided suitable for pumping a discrete quantity of either a liquid or a gas per pump stroke from a flow line to a sample vessel. An operator unit drives a piston within the pump bore, and controls the stroke of the piston and thus the quantity of fluid pumped per stroke. A balanced check valve mechanism controls flow from the pump bore to the pump outlet port, and is provided within and carried by the piston. Line pressure acts on the operator end of the piston to assist the operator in driving the piston during its power stroke. A manifold may be secured to the pump body, and has a flow path therein which is in communication with the inlet port to the pump bore. The pump may also be used for injection purposes to introduce a selected quantity of fluid to a high pressure line.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1991Date of Patent: March 9, 1993Assignee: Precision General, Inc.Inventors: Paul V. Allen, Spencer M. Nimberger, Robert L. Ward
