  • Patent number: 7341003
Abstract: A combustible propellant charge casing for ammunition which can be shot from the barrel of a weapon. So that the erosion-reducing additive will lead to a decrease in the erosive action of the propellant powder present in the molded part of the ammunition better than that of known additives, either polyacetylene or a mixture of WO3 and MoO3 and CeO2 or La2O3 or Y2O3 is used as the erosion-reducing additive. The particle size of the erosion-reducing additive does not exceed 30 ?m, and the specific surface area of the erosion-reducing additive is at least 2 m2/g. The mixture can also contain polyoxymethylene (POM).

    Filed: September 15, 2005
Date of Patent: March 11, 2008
    Assignee: Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH

  • Patent number: 6589374
Abstract: A pourable, plastic-bound explosive charge has a crystalline explosive substance embedded in a polymer matrix which includes a binder, a softener and a metal powder. The metal powder which is added in a proportion of 0.1 to 10 weight % has substantially spherical grains and is one or more of the following materials: vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum or tungsten.

  • Patent number: 6558488
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of making pourable, plastic-bound explosive charges or rocket propellants, to which a metal powder having essentially spherically shaped grains is added. To avoid an increase in the viscosity of the explosive charge or the rocket propellant through polar groups attached to the surface of the metal powder, it is suggested according to the invention that the polar groups of the metal powder be saturated with SiR3 groups (Si=silane; R=organic residue) before the metal powder is added to the explosive mixture. As a result, the polar groups can no longer react with the isocyanates of the explosive charge or the rocket propellant and the specific surface of the respective metal powder, as well as the viscosity of the charges, is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6536351
Abstract: A warhead (1) having a warhead casing (2) that encloses an explosive charge (5). To ensure that, during the detonation of the explosive charge (5), the warhead (1) effects a rapid acceleration of the fragments flying in the flight direction, and a lesser acceleration of the fragments flying away laterally from the warhead, and/or generates a relatively intense lateral pressure wave, the charge has at least two different partial charges (7, 8-10) corresponding to the intended use of the warhead (1). The first partial charge (7), which is disposed in the region of the tip of the warhead (1), and comprises, for example, octogen (HMX), possesses a high detonation speed in order, when detonated, to accelerate heavy-metal fragments (preferably WSM spherical fragments) disposed in front of the partial charge very rapidly forward. In contrast, the second partial charge (8-10), which adjoins the rear of the first partial charge (7), is a far less costly charge, e.g.
