  • Patent number: 5868330
Abstract: A refiner plate has bars integrally formed with the refiner plate base member which have discrete regions of selected physical properties. A material possessing the physical property is deposited in a reservoir in the bar, such as a groove. The reservoir may be positioned in the top of the bar and may be of various shapes. Alternatively, the reservoir with material is positioned on the bar leading or trailing edge. Alternatively, an abrasive surface extends over the entire upper surface of the bar including the leading and trailing edges. The bar may be formed of a white iron alloy which is heat-treated to form a soft matrix with embedded carbide grains. By protecting regions of desired smoothness with a wear-resistant protective coating flow is preserved in selected areas.

  • Patent number: 5492548
Abstract: A method for integrally applying a rough surface to the grooves of paper pulp refiner plates which involves placing the pattern for the plate into a mold and then applying to the desired surfaces of the pattern a mixture including a selected kind of ceramic particles with silica sand, additives and a binder system. The mold is then packed with conventional molding sand. The pattern is removed from the mold and superheated refiner plate base metal is introduced into the mold resulting in penetration of the voids around the particles and adherence of the particles to the surfaces selected by the application of the mixture. Surfaces desired to be smooth may be treated after the pattern is removed from the mold and before pouring by treating the desired surfaces with coating to accomplish that purpose. Ceramic particles used include alumina, silica, zirconia, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, vanadium carbide and niobium carbide. These have the angularity to create the required voids to fill with molten metal.

  • Patent number: 5165592
Abstract: The present invention is a method of molding the cutter bars for refiner plates used in treating pulp slurry in the paper processing industry including impressing in a mold the form of a refiner plate or refiner plate segment, pouring the base plate or pouring the base of the refiner base plate segment. The sand surfaces in the mold which will be in contact with the metal to form the perpendicular surfaces of the cutter bars relative to the refiner plate are then treated with a slurry consisting of an alcohol or water carrier into which powdered brittle metal alloys have been introduced such as titanium, boron, carbon, vanadium, chromium, niobium, tungsten, molybdenum and cobalt 10 microns or less in size in the pure or ferro alloy state. The powdered metal alloy slurry is then dried in one of a number of acceptable ways and the cutter bar base metal is then superheated to a temperature higher than its melting point, after which the molten metal is poured into the mold.
